Hi there,

I'm looking for information on what happened to internet (branchless)
banking in the USA - companies like Wingspan, Netbank, Juniper,
Security First Network Bank and Everbank etc. As far as I know all of
these banks (with the exception of Netbank) essentially failed to
become profitable, acquire customers and build a sustainable business
model. I would love to know why they didn't work, and what happened to
them all in the end. (Did they go bankrupt, get taken over, taken back
into their parent companies etc.). Was the cause of their failure poor
service, lousy products, bad marketing - or is it more fundamental -
that US consumers aren't willing to bank online (at least, not with a
new brand). If there are any reports / histories available on what
happened in summary that would be great - even better would be 'post
mortems' on individual companies.

I don't have internet access from Aug 2nd to 12th, so please don't
expect any feedback between those dates.

Thanks.

Hello dave76-ga

There is an endless amount of information on Internet Banking. Far
from failure, these companies are alive and well. The articles,
reports, books(if you can afford their stratospheric prices) offer
months of reading on this industry.

I addressed the points of your query. Some of the reports below will
clarify that this industry has slowed, but the growth potential still
leaves them convinced of a very large consumer market (55% per one
article).

The business angle...a good starting point on their concerns with IB.

2. Site for books, articles, newsletters focused on Internet Banking.

Very expensive. Perhaps the public library has these subscriptions
for those of us who haven't achieved our first billion!

Consumers have embraced it, with usage nearing 20% of U.S. households

Definitely an educational site for Internet Banking....it might be the

A visit to this website reminds me of Mark Twain's remark on his

It seems that Netbank is thriving, or, at least, still believes it is
the greatest!

"While Internet banking will reshape industry dynamics, to date, it
has been only marginallysuccessful, having only penetrated
approximately 13% of U.S. households. Many analystshave painted an
overly optimistic picture of the potential growth and profitability
withinthe industry over the next 12-18 months. While Dove agrees that
the industry's potentialis significant, we believe that it will be
another 24-36 months before Internet bankingachieves mainstream
status."

Useful site, but you might want to print out this report on Jupiter
rather than reading it online.
"Another example of a virtual bank adding physical points ofpresence

partnerships with Mail Boxes,Etc. and ATM networks. At no cost to

givescustomers UPS 2nd day air delivery labels so that deposits canbe
sent for free from any UPS drop box in the country.Juniper also has
ATM alliances that allow their customers tomake deposits at more than
15,000 ATMs nationwide. This ispossible due to Juniper's partnerships
with various ATMnetworks in addition to deposit-sharing agreements
with severalmajor financial institution ATM owners. Although
fewfinancial institutions currently accept deposits for virtual
banks, many ATM networks already offer or are open to the idea
ofdeposit sharing"

Good site for review of many banks by "Gomez" including Everbank.

11. Online Banking Information

Includes Everbank and many other online banking institutions.

My initial search was simply "Internet banking". This lead to a
multitude of sites and massive information.
My conclusion (based on those websites) is that this industry is a big
part of our future as banking customers.

Good stuff - some I was already aware of, and some wasn't totally
relevant (The Gomez articles) but the overall answer was so thourough
that there was plenty of really good information in there that I
didn't know - and probably wouldn't have found. Thanks!
