[Anne-Marie, a commenter and not a researcher, answered my #479791.
As a thank-you, I am posting this question for her at the same rate
that I offered for that question. Anne-Marie's question follows. Let
me suggest, though, that the question be reframed as "Can you diagnose
this condition?" or "What should I do?" instead of a yes-and-no
question. --Archae0pteryx]

============================================================

What I did was format the C-drive of another computer that was
completely stuck. (that is you could push the start button and the
Windows 98 programm would load etc. but clicking on either one of the
icons on the desktop wouldnt load the program required)
The owner of the computer reckons that the computer was stuck due to
some kind of virus. (Trojan Horse?)

The issue is that the installation CD-rom Windows 98 starts running, but
after it has prepared the wizard Windows 98 Setup to help me through the
rest of the installation proces ( the blue sign underneath gives a 100% done
"message"), a huge black space comes across this installation message and
computer stops running the CD-rom; so it is stuck again!!!!

> Could it be that the computer is damaged due to the virus
beyond repair?

Thanks,

Anne-Marie

braggart,
Due to the broad symptoms you gave, ot is difficult to know exactly
what is cauing your issue. That being said, this is your best bet:

Unplug any connection you have to the Internet.
Turn the computer on by pressing the power button, begin pressing the
"F8" key, this should bring up a boot option screen, one of the
choices will be "Safe Mode" Arrow to than option and hit the Enter
key. This will bring the computer up with a minimal load.
Click Start, Run - Type in MSCONFIG and click OK

CLick the "Start-up" Tab

You will see a long list of programs that load when you start up your
computer. Chances are, one of these programs is freezing up your
computer.
Look at the items in the command column and uncheck the ones that
looks suspicious.
Exit out of MSCONFIG
Do not connect hook up your internet connection yet, Restart your computer.
If your symptoms of the machine freezing up have tempured,(If not, try
disabling your Anti-Virus software, or un-installing it completely,
then re-installing it.) make sure you have an updated subscription of
Anti-Virus Software. If you don't go buy some now. Load it, run a full
system scan, hopefully, it will find soime viruses and remove them.
Then, hook up your internet connection, run an update for you
anti-virus software. Do another system clean with your newly updated
anit-virus software.

You know what I would do, if this doesn't work, actually, even if it
did, go out and buy a $4-500 machine that runs Windows XP. Your
machine has to be over 5 years old. Give it up. Your computing
experience will be measurably more enjoyable. I really hope this helps
you. Let me know if you have any additonal questions. Sorry about the
rambling it is late in the day for me.
Good Luck!

anywhere Tryx, but not here..............!!

braggart (is it something like "HI"??????) still_plugging,

Thanks for your input, however your advice will probably not work
since I have already format the C-drive of this computer. What do you
say?

When I get to my friend's house again (the computer isnt mine)I will
give it a try though.

it does'nt look like a hardware problem, is the Windows CD intact,
look against a light to see if it has scratches on it

issues like this sometimes can end up being 1. Cd Rom 2. HardDrive
has bad clusters may need to be replaced or 3. Memory! Memory would
be my bet it could either be a trojan running in memory to tell if
your memory is bad the only way I was to come about finding out was
put it in another computer, if you get no video on another computer
then your memorys out it's determined on the number of beeps you
motherboard indacates whats wrong.
