Question ID: 481373
How would I find the stock symbols for companies classified by industry?
For example, at www.sec.gov the SEC classifies companies using
Standard Industrial Classification (SIC). However they do not show the
stock symbols for publically traded companies.
I want to know this information for the following exchanges: New York,
AMEX, NASDAQ including Small Cap, Bulletin Board exchange, Toronto
exchange and Toronto Venture exchange.

Jamie,

You can generate the lists you need at Yahoo Finance, which has
comprehensive information on most US and Canadian stocks, and --
happily -- allows you to access the information by industry sector.

Start off by heading to their "Sectors" page at:

Industry Browser - Sector List
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/s_conameu.html

and click on a major sector of choice.

For instance, I clicked on "Financial" which will take you to a page
of sub-sectors:

http://biz.yahoo.com/p/financconameu.html

where I then clicked on "Consumer Financial Services".

This leads you to a handy-dandy page:

http://biz.yahoo.com/p/fsconsconameu.html

where you'll find a complete list of companies in this sector,
including the company name and symbol, along with a host of financial
information.

The first five companies on the list are:

Accredited Home Lenders H (LEND)

ACE Cash Express, Inc. (AACE)

Advance America, Cash Adv (AEA)

Advanta Corp. (ADVNB)

Aegis Communications Grou (AGIS.OB)

I trust this information fully answers your question. However, please
don't rate this answer until you have everything you need. If you
would like any additional information, just post a Request for
Clarification to let me know how I can assist you further, and I'm at
your service.

All the best,
