Looking for a list of experienced, sure-handed, Licensed
Opthalmologists in Ukiah, Clear Lake, Kelseyville (Lake County or Napa
County), California. Our Eighty year-old mom, who lives in Clear Lake, has
glaucoma and cataracts. We want to have the cataracts removed and
lenses implanted. If you have personal experience with an Ophthalmologist in
these geographical locations, or know of someone with personal
experience who can make a recommendation, this would be a good start.
We will take the names recommended, ask friends and other doctors to
look at the list, as well run it by the California Academy of
Ophthalmology. We intend to visit the doctors who are the most highly
recommended and choose the one for us. But we must start with a list.
It would help if the doctors named come with an address and
telephone number. We will make do with either an address OR telephone
number. In a pinch, our first choice would be to have the address.
We will take ultimate responsibility for the doctor we choose. Thank
you.

An actual list of names in these geographical locations is what we
need. We do not want to wade through websites. We have already tried
this, and it is not efficient. Names and addresses of qualified
people is what we need. Thank you.

Hello firebird-ga,

The American Academy of Ophthalmology (The Eye M.D. Association) has a
great catalog of practicing ophthalmologists with various areas of
specialty within the field. To be a member of this association, the
following requirement must be met:

"Member: A physician who holds a degree of Doctor of Medicine, Doctor
of Osteopathy, or equivalent medical degree as determined by the board
of trustees, who holds a valid and unrestricted license to practice
medicine in the United States, Canada, or the country in which the
practice of medicine is regularly conducted, and who has
satisfactorily completed an entire program of formal residency
training in ophthalmology of at least three (3) years duration, shall
be eligible to apply for membership as an Active Member."

http://www.aao.org/aao/about/membership.cfm

In searching for candidates in the jurisdictions that you indicated,
there were no practicing ophthalmologists in Ukiah or Kelseyville. I
did, however, find one such practitioner in Clearlake, and several in
Napa. In total, there are 2157 registered members in California listed
by city of practice. If you would like to see the entire list, go to
the link below and just specify California as the state:

http://www.aao.org/aao/find_eyemd.cfm

specifications are listed below. Addresses are provided where

Cataract surgery to an ophthalmologist is like appendectomy to a
general surgeon. It is one of the safest surgeries and fairly basic
to most US-trained MDs.

When looking for a good doctor, my general rule of thumb is to look
for an MD or group practice that do not deal with HMOs. In general,
MDs that accept HMOs are very busy and do not have time for you. It
doesn't matter if they graduated and trained at Harvard Medical
School--if the doctor does not have any time to listen and explain,
(s)he is not a good doctor. I think the best way to find a good
doctor is by word of mouth. Good luck.
