I need to get general statistics on small law firms in the U.S. (< 10
employees). How many of these are there? How has this number changed
(growth/loss) over time? How many new lawyers graduate each year
that go to work for small firms? Where can I find a database to be
able to "query" this type of data using different criteria?

Try the American Bar Association or the Association of Legal
Administrators. Both organizations keep the statistics that you are
seeking.
