Dear junebugrobts-ga,
Gel fuel is alcohol based and according to the various suppliers, does
not emit any smoke, odor, or toxic fumes, so you do not require a
venting fireplace. They do state, however, that the fireplaces are not
intended to be a significant heat source. Also, the product may not be
suitable for people with allergies or asthma, or those who are
allergic to alcohol fumes.
From my research, there appears to be three main suppliers of the
fuel: Sunjel, Real Flame and Firebrand. Additional information on the
product is contained on these web sites.

Apart from the above sites, there are quite a few web sites which have
suitable fireplaces for fuel gel. These are just some of them. For
others, use the search terms below which may led you to others.

Also, have a look at the Google Adwords by the search results. There
may be other companies which may offer suitable products.
I?ve looked on Google Groups to see if there are any comments on the
product. I only found these.
"If your looking for heat to warm up, this does not do that. If you
looking for the romance of a small fire crackling from 1- 2 canasters
for about 2-3 hours it can be relaxing . We own one use it often .
The canasters are about 2 to 3 $ so stock up."

"I think what they are referring to is the gel FUEL that is used in
those free standing fireplaces, and yes, it did produce stinky fumes;
I used to have 2 of those fake fireplaces & if we lit them in winter,
we'd have to open all the windows!!"

I think the answer is, to find someone who has the fireplace in their
house and to go and see it in action.
I hope this answers your question. If it does not, or the answer is
unclear, then please ask for clarification of this research before
rating the answer. I shall respond to the clarification request as
soon as I receive it.
Thank you
