Win2000 Professional
I recently experienced a power failure - subsequently I have lost my
ADSL connection and can not create a new one. After a lot of messing
around, I got to use the create new dial-up connection wizard, selected
manual set-up and went right through the process. Right at the end, it
asks you to give the connection a name - it is at this point that it
fails and will not accept any name.
What i can remember of the errorlog was references to access denied on
some ras???.dll file.
I can no longer access the internet from the PC - which is driving
wife & son bananas. this is compounded by me working here in the UK,
whilst family are in France - so have to give instructions to 12 yr
old son over the phone to try
and fix it. I don't actually have the win2000 disk -think it got lost
when we moved to france.
using a plug & play adsl modem from Alcatel (SpeedTouch), seems to be fine.

Hi there. I have tried to create a standard dial-up using a modem - I
get the same problem - unable to create the account. I am pretty
experienced with PC's - my gut feeling is that I will ahve to
re-install - but I don;t understand the implecations of this. I have
tried using the creation disk from the supplier (Wandoo France). It
appears to run through no problem- but won't connect - further
investigation shows that no dial-up connection has been created.

It is possible that it was damaged. It is plug-n-play and I have
removed it/reinstalled a couple of times - seems to be fine. There is
no built in modem. I looked at the website. This image
http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/newdocs/win2000/images/Image8.gif is where
it all goes tits for me. When I click "Finish" it says the name I give
it is invalid and must contain at least one character that is not a
space - this is regardless of what I call it (ADSL Connection,
Wanadoo, Internet etc). I'll be back in france @ the weekend armed
with a win2000 OS disk. How do I go about re-installing the dial-up
networking from the system disk? any ideas? I strongly suspect that
is what I'll have to do - would like to avoid a full re-install in at
all possible..

This is the message I get at the end of the "create a dial-up manually" wizard.

The entry name must contain at least one character that is not a space
and can not begin with a period. Choose a different name

It's my opinion that it's throwing this error because it doesn't have
a more appropriate one - I strongly suspect that it is getting an
access denied problem when trying to write the configuration away to
where ever it has to...

Hi,

As a work around (just to get your emails etc.) I would sugest using
the standard 56k modem connection then running internet start up
wizard to get an ISP list (local) choose a free one ie not a contract.

Just to clarify your exisitng problem, have you got the CD from the ADSL provider?

Hi,

I guess the ADSL modem would have got damaged because of a power surge.

So I'm giving the following instructions to set up dial up networking
on the computer:

1. Remove the ADSL modem from the computer.

2. Refer the system configuration to see if the computer has a 56K built-in modem.

3. Run a modem test to see if the modem is working fine (you can do
this with the help of Windows Help or the manufactures documentation).

4. For a dialup networking you should have a service provider (For
example: AOL) if you have the correct details (like to which number to
dial for a connection) provide them when creating the dial up network
else consult the service provide if the details are correct.

If you are confident about the above steps, please refer to the
following website for instructions on how to set-up dial up networking
in Windows 2000 Professional:

http://www.nbcs.rutgers.edu/newdocs/win2000/win2000.php3

I found this website through Google Search (Keywords: dialup
networking Windows 2000 professional).

Hi,

Please give the exact error message you get while creating the dial up
networking. I will research to see if I can get the installation steps
for dial up networking installation.

Thanks.

I searched microsoft support site on the error you had mentioned. It
seems you have to run Windows 2000 Setup once again. Vist the link

Make sure that the event logging service is enabled and running, that
resolved this problem on a system that I was working on. Added this
comment since this thread is the #1 result on google for that error
message.
