Blucken -

You require information onboth "water treatment" and "safe drinking
water"? Or can there just be a general number for amount allocated to
"safe drinking water" -- whether importing, treating, etc?

A generic category would be fine or either or both
thanks

Hello blucken-ga,

Nice to see you back here, as always.

Can you let me know how much detail you're looking for?

I've found a UN document that says:

-----
The current investment in water and sanitation in
developing countries is about $15 billion annually.
According to the World Bank, governments are responsible
for close to 75 per cent of financing and the private
sector for about 11 per cent, with the remaining 14 per
cent of financing coming from external support agencies.
-----

So, of the $15 billion spent on water supply and quality in the developing world:

Governments provide $11.25 billion

NGO's provide about $2.1 billion

and the rest is from the private sector.

Trouble is...I haven't yet been able to track down the World Bank
stats that apparently underlie these numbers.

Do you need more detail than the above figures? If so, what else is needed?

Let me know.

The source for that data would be great as I would need it for my
report - if you could find it and some other data/ detail I could pay
the full amount, if not I would settle for less
Thanks (as always)

Hello again,

I'm providing the figures I mentioned earlier, along with their
original source, as I understood your comment to mean that these were
agreeable to you as an answer to your question. If I've misunderstood
at all, just let me know, and I'm more than happy to continue pursuing
this.

The UN declared 2003 the "International Year of Fresh Water" and,
along with a host of meetings, press events, etc,, produced a flurry
of water-related reports including this one:

http://www.un.org/events/water/SupplyingWater.pdf

Supplying Water ? For a Price

in which it notes:

"...The current investment in water and sanitation in
developing countries is about $15 billion annually.
According to the World Bank, governments are responsible
for close to 75 per cent of financing and the private
sector for about 11 per cent, with the remaining 14 per
cent of financing coming from external support agencies."

A substantial chunk of the government funding is funneled through the
World Bank, as is evident from this Bank report:

http://www.worldbank.org/watsan/pdf/KyotoWaterIssues_final3.pdf

Water?A Priority for Responsible Growth and Poverty Reduction
An Agenda for Investment and Policy Change

The World Bank Group has historically invested about US$3 billion a year
in water-related sectors, accounting for about 5 percent of
investment in developing countries.

[Note: In other words, water-related projects account for about 5% of
the World Bank's total funding efforts]

I trust these are the sorts of numbers -- from highly credible sources
-- that you were seeking. But again, if there's more you need, just
say the word.

All the best...

I was more interested in development. If you have any interest in
that, www.undp.org - Basically gives stats on the Human Development
Index.

WHO has: http://www.who.int/docstore/water_sanitation_health/Globassessment/GlobalTOC.htm

This has some investment figures:

http://www.who.int/docstore/water_sanitation_health/Globassessment/Global3.2.htm#Figure%203.5

Some more:

http://www.thewaterpage.com/basic_needs.htm

I trawled my history but can't find anything else that might be of any
relevence to you.
