Hi Jeremy,
The following is the result of my research for the years the
Portuguese and the Dutch arrived in Sri Lanka. These are excerpts in
reference to the years they arrived, however, I suggest you read the
articles in their entirety for a deeper understanding of the history
of the island.
The Portuguese arrived in Sri Lanka in1505.
The Dutch arrived in Sri Lanka in 1658.
"The Portuguese arrived in Colombo in 1505 and gained a monopoly on
the invaluable spice trade. By 1597, the colonisers had taken formal
control of the island. However, they failed to dislodge the powerful
Sinhalese kingdom in Kandy which, in 1658, enlisted Dutch help to
expel the Portuguese. The Dutch were more interested in trade and
profits than religion or land, and only half-heartedly resisted when
the British arrived in 1796. The Brits wore down Kandy's sovereignty
and in 1815 became the first European power to rule the entire
island."

"By the time the Portuguese arrived in 1505, the Sinhalese in the
Maritime regions had established themselves in the Kingdom of Kotte in

"...As a result of invasions from South India the Kingdom of
Anuradhapura fell by the end of the 10th century A.D. Vijayabahu I
repulsed the invaders and established his capital at Polonnaruwa in
the 11th century A.D. Other great kings of Polonnaruwa were Parakrama
Bahu the Great and Nissanka Malla, both of whom adorned the city with
numerous buildings of architectural beauty.
Invasions continued intermittently and the capital was moved
constantly until the Portuguese arrived in 1505, when the chief city
was established in Kotte, in the western lowlands. The Portuguese came
to trade in spices, but stayed to rule until 1658 in the coastal
regions, as did the Dutch thereafter. Dutch rule lasted from 1658 to
1796, in which year they were displaced by the British. During this
period the highland kingdom, with its capital Kandy, retained its
independence despite repeated assaults by foreign powers who ruled the
rest of the country. In 1815 the Kingdom of Kandy was ceded to the
British who thus established their rule over the whole island..."

The Portuguese Period
"At this time Sri Lanka had three main kingdoms ? the Kingdom of
Jaffna in the north, the Kingdom of Kandy in the central highlands and
Kotte, the most powerful, in the south-west. In 1505 the Portuguese,
under Lorennco de Almeida established friendly relations with the king
of Kotte and gained, for Portugal, a monopoly in the spice and
cinnamon trade, which soon became of enormous importance in Europe..."

The Dutch Period
"Attempts by Kandy to enlist Dutch help in expelling the Portuguese
only resulted in the substitution of one European power for another.
By 1658, 153 years after the first Portuguese contact, the Dutch took
control over the costal areas of the Island. During their
140-year-rule the Dutch, like Portuguese, were involved in repeated
unsuccessful attempts to bring Kandy under their control..."

The British Period
"The French revolution resulted in a major shake-up among the European
powers and in 1796 the Dutch were easily supplanted by the British,
who in 1815 also won the control of the kingdom of Kandy, becoming the
first European power to rule the whole island. But in 1802, Sri Lanka
became a Crown Colony and in 1818 a unified administration for the
island was set up..."

Dutch Colonization (1658 AD - 1796 AD)
"Portuguese rule was at its worst characterized by greed, cruelty, and
intolerance. Dutch arrival in Sri Lanka was a result of attempts by
the Kandy king to seek for help in expelling the Portuguese from the
island."
