I have installed a D-Link DSL-G604T wireles router...and ever since my
Shareaza is slow and keeps dropping the connection to the hubs

Can you provide me with a full list of settings for both the router
and for Shareaza. Also any usful browser settings to provide optimium
general performance.

I am on a 512 Broadband connection, currently with
Freeserve/wanadoo in the UK...but I am thinking of upgrading...probably to the
AOL 1 or 2 meg package

I am running Windows XP with service pack 2

Hi!!

Are you sure that the problem is in the router configuration?
I asked you because there exist a problem with Windows XP SP2 and P2P,
see the following article:
"XP SP2 could slowdown P2P downloads":
http://microsoft.weblogsinc.com/entry/4341347581391114/

Fortunately there is a patch to the TCPIP.SYS files that fix this
limitation. You can see that this patch worked fine o shareaza users:
"xp sp2 - shareaza performs poorly - solution, xp sp2 - solution
confirmed to problem":
http://board.iexbeta.com/index.php?showtopic=51157

You can download the patch from this page:
http://www.lvllord.de/
http://www.lvllord.de/download.php?url=en/EvID4226Patch212-en.zip

Please let me know if this solution works in your case in order to
post this in the answer box and claim the prize. If this does not
work, let me know also in order to continue the research with the
router configuration.

Regards.

I've installed the patch....but it hasn't made any difference so far (
although when i resolve the main problem, I'm looking forward to
increased speed.

The problem I have now only started after I installed the router.
Shareaza was running on my XP with Service Pack 2 before without the
problems I now have.

So I believe I still need all the relevant settings to get over the
problem ( I suspect....but have no real idea.....that the problem is
related to the inbuilt security systmes in the router......I also have
Norton Internet security running ( came oackaged with XP when I got
the PC)

I don't have a "Virtual Server" tab in the Advanced section (or
anywhere else I have looked!!)

So...my problem still exists!!!

Also......when Shareaza is actually running the upload seems to run
much faster than the downlod...I have no idea what speeds to expect,
but typicall Uploads are anything from 2 to 40 KB/s, whereas download
speeds are generally about 2/3 KB/s, occasionally up to about 12 KB/s

Shareaza is actually one of the easier P2P applications to configure.
It should only require a single forwarded port.

Step 1: Find out which port Shareaza is using. This will be under
Tools > Shareaza Settings > Connection > Port. Either use the default
port (not "Random-0") or choose a random port yourself, which is
better for a variety of reasons. I use port 60996 for all P2P
programs.

Step 2: From what I've learned from the DSL-G604T manual, port
forwarding options are under the Advanced > Virtual Server tab in your
router configuration. You have most probably already been here in
order to configure your router, so you should know how to get there,
if not, it's the URL address: 10.1.1.1

It will ask for the:
Rule Name: (Shareaza)

Private IP: (your computer's IP, not the router IP. your IP can be
found by going to the Start button > Run > Type "cmd"/OK > Type
"ipconfig" > Look under "IP Address." it should be something like
10.0.1.1.X according to the manual)

Protocol: (Choose Both, as Shareaza uses both TCP and UDP)

Port Start: (port number you chose under the Shareaza settings) Port
End: (same port number)

Port Map: (same port number)

These are the steps I took to configure Shareaza on my own D-Link 604
router. Hopefully they're the same for yours.
