In Jan. 200 there were 69.8 million Internet hosts vs the 200 million plus Internet hosts today. You will also find the fastest growing hosting countries and their growth rates, the largest countries, top 10 second level domains, and a lot more. If your browser is recent enough, you can watch the host figures grow by the second. It is that up to date. If you need any further clarifications, please let me know. Cheers digsalot |

Hi again buffalo I have been finding this research to be fascinating so I am going to add some more information as a comment. First of all, another bit of news about the website I mentioned above. They do have an interactive tool for historical data which would contain detailed information about growth rates among other things. Since you asked "where you could find" I thought I would include it since I don't know just how important this information is to you. It might just be important enough that you would pay $5000 for a single month's license to use the tool. Material relating to Internet and hosting growth is a high premium stock in trade for many. "Global Internet Statistics (by Language)" - ( http://www.glreach.com/globstats/index.php3 ) While this page does not break down by country but by language groups, I am including it as the material found here may help enrich any report you are doing or research you are undertaking. It is slightly off topic for your question but often collateral information can be just what is needed as a spark or direction pointer for additional research. The number of Internet hosts for each language is in the right hand column. "Internet Trends" - Here you will find plain text reports dating back to 1966 which trace the growth of host numbers year by year and country by country. It seems to be exactly what your question was about. For example, in 1995 the United Arab Emirates had 11 hosts, in 1996 - 365 hosts, 1998 - 1,940 hosts, 2000 - 19,718 hosts, 2001 - 34,338 hosts, and so on and so on. The search was Google Key words - host growth statistics, Internet hosts by country, Internet surveys, and Internet growth trends Cheers again digsalot |

These figures can be misleading. They are not the number of hosting services / companies that sell hosting, but rather: What Do We Measure? We measure the number of named (in DNS) hosts, that is computers which have a permanent IP address. It includes servers, workstations in universities and businesses, ports in modem banks of Internet Service providers, and so on. It does not, however, include a home computer that would only get an IP address when it connects to a provider's modem bank. http://www.netsizer.com/info.html#sampling This includes most computers that have a broadband connection - I am one of those users, and I definitely to not consider my computer to be a "host". |
