Two questions about printing (bound) books:
1) What are the steps involved in printing a book?
2) What are some common printing machines for small publishers (not
massmarket PBs etc)?

I'm looking for some resources that answer these questions well. In
particular, I'm trying to figure out why printing is so expensive for
small orders (eg 1000-10,000 books).

These days, it's somewhat rare for a small press to own its own
printing equipment (because it's cost prohibative). Would you instead
be interested in sources for having a small run of books printed?

Thanks for comment.  Actually, now that you mention that, I'd be more
interested in seeing any resources on the breakdown of costs and some
of the equiptment used and their prices.  (Is labor a big factor?)

Can you find a resource of various book-printing machinery with prices?
