Surely the teacher who assigned this project is expecting a 500-word
essay written by the student, not by a professional researcher hired
on the Internet.

Not all buildings are built in the same way, of course. Here is some
interesting material about the design and construction of skyscrapers
that might be helpful as you prepare your essay:

Is this even allowed in school?
How am I supposed to answer this question even if I wrote an 500-word essey?

Asking for help with homework is the right thing to do. And google
answers is an excellent tool to use for this purpose. I read your
question and I hope I can help answer it for you. But first I need to
say something about the previous comments.

Those persons making comments here about your question assumed that
you were asking them to write an essay for you. But if your question
is read carefully it clearly shows that you never asked anyone to
write the essay.

You were thoughtful and very resourceful when including how and why
you needed assistance by stating, "...for science project... 5th
grade...We need a essay 500 words." This was good because it helps the
researcher find the type of information best suited for your needs.
You did the right thing but in my opinion you were misunderstood by
the researchers.

The persons making comments about your question probably believed you
were asking them to write the essay for you because you offered 50
dollars for help which is a lot of money for a 5th grader to have. In
my opinion the researchers should have asked you whether or not you
wanted them to write an essay for you or to help by giving you
information and source material about your subject and tips on how to
organize and create the essay.

The rules of google-answers restrict the researchers from doing
homework assigned to students such as writing a word-for-word essay
for them. This is a form of cheating called "plagerism" That is why
you didn't get the quality answer that this forum usually supplies.
Don't be discouraged by this lack of response, it is my opinion that
you should have gotten better service.

Now let me offer some ideas that might help you in your science
project and essay. Before acting on any suggestions I make here you
need to discuss them with your parents. You will need their
permission.

First, you asked about design and structure of buildings.

The experts who design buildings are called "Architects". Any
questions you have about buildings and how they are designed can be
answered by an Architect. They are well-educated and usually have a
college degree in their field of study which is understandibly called
"Architecture".

The study of Architecture is ancient. During the advancement of
History methods for constructing buildings have improved considerably.
And by looking back at any point in time we can see that buildings,
because of their design and structure, reflect the environment,
culture and aspirations of the people who occupy them.

If I were you and was searching for information about building design
I would go to the Yellow Pages in the phone book and look up the word
"Architects". I'm doing that very thing right now with my phone book.
I see about 50 listings of companies and persons under this catagory.

Just below I find related sub-catagories: Architectural Graphics,
Illustrators, Supplies. It is good to know that Architects are both
artists and scientists. They use art in the form of sculpture,
paintings and drawings to show their ideas about design to persons who
want to put up buildings. This is easy to see, that art is used here,
for buildings themselves are a form of art.

Now here comes the part that you need to ask for your parents help. If
I were you I would call some of the phone numbers of Architects listed
in the Yellow Pages to ask them questions about their work. Before
asking, tell them the same thing you told this forum: why you are
needing information about structure and design of buildings. Let them
know it is a school project. Most persons are proud of their work and
will consider the opportunity as an honor and joy to answer your
questions. Sometimes people are too busy to stop and talk at the time
so maybe you can ask about a good time to call back when they are free
to help.

Have some questions ready to ask before calling. Write them down on a
sheet of paper or in a notebook and have a pencil ready to take notes
when you speak with the person. If you take notes they don't have to
be long. You may need to just write a few things like names or
numbers. You may not take any notes at all and thats OK- but it is a
good idea to have a pencil and paper ready just in case you need them.

In your question to google-answers you also asked about how a building
is made structurally sound.

Once again I am going answer by introducing you to the people who are
the experts. I can think of three main catagories within this group of
experts.

First, the people who know how to construct safe buildings are the
"Licensed Building Contractors." They are also called "General
Contractors" or "General Building Contractors" or "Building
Contractors".

These are the workers who actually put up the buildings. They plan and
organize the labor and materials needed to complete their job. Most of
these General Contractors own the business that they work out of or
sometimes they work for another company. Because the business of
building safe buildings is so important these Contractors are tested
by government agencies and must prove their abilities and knowledge
before receiving a license to work.

The next catagory of persons in the business of building safety are
those who work with safety laws such as elected officials, lawyers and
Government Inspectors.

Government Inspectors go to the building to look at the work done by
the Building Contractor. The Inspector makes sure the work adheres to
all the safety rules. These rules are known as "Building Codes." If
the Inspector finds the General Contractor did not follow the rules he
can make him do the work again until he does it correctly.

Another group that helps in giving us safe buildings are those who do
the "Materials Testing". The materials that make up a building such as
wood, pipes, wires, cement, etc have to be of a certain quality. There
are organizations that specialize in making sure building materials
are tested for safety, soundness and quality.

Building Inspectors are listed in the government pages of a telephone
book. Building Contractors are in the Yellow Pages. Books about
Materials Testing are in libraries. You can get help with research
projects in libraries for free.
