I refer to a song in the new movie Alfie (2004).

What band plays the fast and jazzy version of the song "The Beat
Goes On"? In the film, the song starts at O:58:38 when Alfie meets Liz
in her apartment.

The song is not on the movie soundtrack CD.

If you find out what band it is, and if the $3.5 are enough, where/how
can I download or purchase this version of the song?

As there is applause at the end of the song (and it is unrelated to the movie
plot), I am sure that it has not been exclusively recorded for the
movie.

Please note I am only interested in this specific jazzy version and
not in the general background or the original performers (Sonny &
Cher) of "The Beat Goes On".

Hello dschoenenberger-ga,

I have not seen the movie Alfie, however Patricia Barber does a very
jazzy live version of the Sonny and Cher song ?The Beat Goes On? on
her 1999 CD ?Companion?. You can hear the entire song at her website.

Click on ?The Beat Goes On? about half way down the page.

It includes applause at the end, as you described. Could this be the
song that you are looking for?

Hello dschoenenberger-ga,

I found a clip of that scene from the movie, and the song that I found
isn't the right one. I'll keep looking.

Hello again dschoenenberger-ga,

I?m back for my second try. I found a clip of this scene at the
following link. The scene is titled ?Takes One to Know One?.

The One Network
Alfie Film Clip "Takes One To Know One"
http://theonenetwork.com/movies/Alfie/4551/Film_Clip_Takes_One_To_Know_One.html

The song playing in the background sounds a lot like the band ?All
Seeing I?. You can download the song in Windows Media Format at the
following website:

House Music
Playlist 1998-1999
http://triphophouse.free.fr/house/son/play9899.htm

The song is second from the bottom.

Does this sound like the correct one to you?

Googlenut-ga

thank you for your research, it is really great!
yes it is the right scene, "takes one to know one"
the voice of 'all seeing i' sounds a lot like the alfie version
but unfortunately it is not the movie song

the alfie version has more brass in it, and there is no
keyboard/synthesizer in alfie. There is an instrumental interlude that
is difficult to play for the brass, followed by a saxophone solo, and
it ends with a drums solo

as the voices sound very similar, maybe "all seeing i" has recorded
the song for alfie but not published it otherwise

i have converted the whole alfie "the beat goes on" to mp3 and i could
let you "as a friend" hear it once if you have email mine is

Hello dschoenenberger-ga,

Thanks, but Google Answers policies do not allow researchers to

It is possible that a different version of the song by All Seeing I
was used for the movie.

?All Seeing I is the working name of three UK-based DJs: Parrot,

themselves ? and a series of guest vocalists, including Jarvis Cocker,
Philip Oakey, Simon Boswell, Babybird, and Tony Christie. The album
produced two hits, "Walk Like a Panther" and "The Beat Goes On," but
failed to match the success of those songs.?

Hi dschoenenberger

I was sure I had this version of the track in my collection, and a
little searching has paid off. The version used in Alfie is definately
performed by Buddy Rich. Don't be misled - Buddy's version does have
female vocals! (And applause at the end).

Buddy's version of the track appears on the CD "Blue Break Beats
Vol.4", released by the Blue Note label in 1998. You can get that CD
from many online retailers, including Amazon.com, and crucially, you
can listen to a sample to confirm the correct version here:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000I0RI/

Just click on the link, scroll down until you see "listen to samples",
then follow the instructions. Please confirm this is the Alfie version
and I'll post this as an answer.

Thanks! I hope you'll be grooving around to the tune soon!

clint34 -
thank you for your comment.
the website you mention does however refer to the first movie and not
the remake in 2004.
i think that the song in the movie is not performed by sonny and cher,
as the title song "Alfie" of the 1964 movie was.

I'm very interested by this question, and if I'd seen it earlier,
would've been able to answer straight away! Yes, checking the clip of
the 2004 Alfie, the music in the background is definitely the jazz
drummer legend, Buddy Rich's version of "The Beat Goes On" from 1967.
I'm pretty sure the vocalist is actually his daughter, Cathy Rich. The
song was originally written by Sonny Bono (of Sonny & Cher).
You can also find this Buddy Rich version of the song on:
http://www.juno.co.uk/products/63835-01.htm Sampled (CD2, track 8) and
http://www1.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=12;-1;-1;-1&sku=105252
The Best of Sampled (CD2, track 12)

Absolute classic version of the song, indeed!
