Question ID: 48459
Will The Maxtrox RT2500 video capture board function properly in my
system?

After buying the RT2500 capture board from the Videoguys.com I read in
there technical page that there were major compatibility issues with
the Dell 8200 nVidia cards currently being offered from dell. They
felt this problem was caused by an XP driver.

Before buying the RT2500 I read on the Videoguys web site that the
GeForce was a good graphics card for the RT2500. But they had not yet
tested the GeForce4 cards. The GeForce4 Card Was shiped with my 8200
Dell. I am hopeing this means the Videoguys testing is outdated for
the current Dell nVidia cards. And these problems have been solved
for the current 8200.

My system is about 3 months old

GeForce4 Ti 4600, AGP, 128MB

I can't find a straight answer. Therefore, I'll leave this as a
comment. Sadly it appears you won't know until you try. However, be
optimistic. If you believe, then MAYBE your computer will believe,
too (it's worth a shot). Given that the Dell 8200 used to come with
much weaker video cards, I think you have a good shot of having your
GeForce4 based system work. Good Luck!

Your video card has been certified by Matrox for use with the RT2500.

Your Dell system has not been certified for use with the RT2500.

I can find no reported issues (other than at video guys) of an XP
driver problem with the GeForce4.

It appears that Matrox did their certification using Windows 2000
instead of XP.

Your configuration of the Dell 8200 has the best card Dell offers for
this line. Other Dell 8200 configurations have had the GeForce2 and
GeForce3 cards which might have prompted the video guys report.

Here are some links that you might find useful. In particular, you
might want to try one of these user forums to see if anyone has had
success with your configuration.

You might have luck in the forums on these sites:

Video guys reporting trouble with the 8200 as recently as 3/15/2002.

Dell 8200 old video card options:

(It appears that Dell won't allow this to link directly to the
document. Here are the old cards they had in the 8200) Note that
these cards are only GeForce2 and GeForce3 cards. So even Dell's
information is not current on this.

Thank you for the comment.

I give it 5 stars. I now have the latest XP drivers and tested the
motherboard chip set for compatibility. Dell Hailed this computer as
there first Video processor for the PC market. Thinking Dell had a
good reputation I figured the computer was fully tested and spent a
lot of money. Hopeing the computer would pay for itself converting
peoples home videos to DVD. I purchased the computer through the
employee purchase plan and maybe was privileged to some insider
information. That mybe why Dell is not giveing you a stright answer.

So in short, I am a believer. Hopefully my computer believes in its
self, like the little train that could. Thinks it can.
