Hi GA Community,

A co-worker of mine is getting a puppy ( Part Shihtzu/ Poodle ) and is
desperate for some ideas on what to name him.

The puppy is a male and mostly white with beige markings.
The puppy will be 2 months old when he brings it home.

So come on guys, lets get some great ideas!!

Thanks,

Steph53

My deepest thanks to everyone here!!!

*Phew*, I had no idea I would get so many responses. I just got home
from being away for the weekend and what a pleasant surprize to see
all your creative ideas here :)

I'll be sure to print out the posts tomorrow and give them to my co-worker.
And just by seeing all your responses, I'll bet he becomes another

Thanks again,

A friend of mine created a name and called his dog "Deeojie"
(pronounced 'dee-OH-jee').

What does it mean? Well, translated it means, D...O...G

I thought it was clever.

My mother-in-law named her new spaniel puppy "Toby." It's a cute name
and suits him well.

I assume the obvious "Shiht-Poo" was already rejected, although I
can't imagine why. How about "Zoodle"? :-)

Your co-worker will learn this soon enough, but a good name for just
about any 2-month-old puppy is "Puddles." ;-)

AM777,
That's a cop out. Name him anything, just don't name him after me.
Just checked a German site on dogs, cutsy noise effect whenever the cursur moved.
Shit zhu are toy sized, poodles come in different sizes, but for
"practical" reasons I expect that the poodle parent was also rather
small.
So: Rex or Maximus or Duke seem inappropriate, but then again, they
are great anmes for a dog that have tradition, and the contrast could
be attractive -
and, as with children, maybe his character would be positively influenced.
In the two month-old stage (already spoken about), you're going to
want a name that you can bark out as an explitive to gain his
attention. So sweety, soft names are not so good.
I like "Bubba" as a compromise, a Deep South nickname for a male
infant - that you can bark out - but that can also be spoken softly
with affection.
This may not be so appropriate if you live down South and your grown
neighbor still happens to be addressed by everyone with (t)his
childhood nickname.

I've often been amused by the names that pedigreed dogs are saddled
with, and the very much less dignified nicknames that they're actually
called by.

It's common to have a pedigreed pooch whose legal name is something
like Sir Chisbourne Pupsworth of Anklebone Manor, and his owners call
him "Stinky" (which is, IMHO, a much better name for a dog).

"Mr. Underfoot" could be quite descriptive.

Or - since he is part Shihtzu - "Endust"

Shihtzus are great at cutting down on the housework. Simply spray
Endust or Pledge on 'em and let 'em walk on the furniture.

I also have a fluffy white cat that performs double duty as an after pizza napkin.

Cheers

That's why a purebred dog's name the owners attached to him is called
his 'call name'.

Same for a registered horse - only then it's called a 'barn name'.

I knew a couple who lived in London and had a long haired Dachshund.

The called him Voetsak (pronounced Footsack not sure about the spelling)
- which is Afrikaans for F*** Off

They would get some very strange looks for a few people when they took
him out for a scamper in the London parks.

My two little Yorkies are named: Beans and Bugs. Now we named the pups
before we got them. Bugs fits his name. He is a whiner, cryer,
screamer (when I say screamer I MEAN at the top of his little lungs),
barker when ever he doesn't get his way. Which is most of the time.
Beans on the other hand is just the opposite. But he has gas.... And
they are brothers.

Cynthia,
I wouldn't make fun of anyone - not here, at least - but I don't
really believe you have a Ch ... ( got to check the speling)
Chihuahau, much less one called Kitty. But if you really do, I will
have to up my humor-rating for you.

myoarin,

I really do have a Chihuahua named "Kitty." She barks! I have a hard
time remembering her species myself, because every time I take her in
Petco (mumbling to myself that I will head straight to the dog
area)...I somehow find myself standing in front of the Cat Food. She
is so friendly, small, and adorable, I get distracted by folks that
want to pet her, they invariably ask her name, and saying "her name is
Kitty" several times subconsciously sends me to the Cat Department.
No joke, it's happened several times.

Oh, here's proof of my claim:

Hi, Steph,

Please tell your friend to relax and wait till the puppy arrives, and
then see what seems to suit him. If it were my pet, I sure wouldn't
name him before meeting him. I'd want to give it at least a few days
while we got to know each other and I got a sense of his personality
and style. I'd also avoid baby names (names that apply only to a
young critter and will sound silly when he's grown up) and names that
are just about his color or shape of ears or something; I'd prefer
something much more personal. After a little get-acquainted period, a
name is likely to suggest itself through some association. For
instance, I named one cat Luciano because he was such a vocalist. But
I couldn't have known that beforehand.

Cynthia,
I believe you - unless you are a writer of stories for pet mags.
What kind of prize would you like?
But the really best of all this is that you sent me to that question
that told me all sorts of things about ga-researchers and ga: that
paper from Harvard, that struck me as maybe a fine exercise in
statistics, but when talking about income per minute or hour, he
completely overlooked the fact that you folks must spend a lot of time
that does not result in answers, entertaining no doubt, but still time
that you would invest in an answer if you could.
But maybe you have software that pops new questions on your screen
while you're doing "real" work, and you're so disciplined that you
make an instant decision to ignore it and continue what you were
doing.
From all the comments, though, at least some researchers are not like
that, at a search by researcher name (another popular one) didn't let
me think that one can only earn a little pocket money - looking at
answer income over one month, for example.
But that is just criticism of the paper.
Kitty is a lovely name and dear to me: a Kitty-Jo (in the deep, deep
south) in my second and eight/ninth grade (same girl, demonstrating my
good and unchanging taste ;) ), and a Kitten a few years later,
whose family thought she should forego her nickname when she moved to
the States, apparently thinking that everyone would make the
synonymous reference they apparently had.
At least that gets us back to names. but I still don't like little dogs.
Thanks loads for replying to my comment,
Myoarin
(pretty satisfied with the nickname, but now wish I had spelled it
Majorin (theoretical German female form of Major that sounds the same
but wouldn't have been so obvious).

Best name for a small male dog is Cowboy. Easy to call and people
love it. You'll see little kids face light up when they hear his
name.

Here is a nice collection of the interesting Shih-Tzu names with description:

For the part Shih-Tzu/Poodle, I think good name would be something
like "Blast" or "Blaster" - small, fast, and joyful puppy ;-). From
the previously posted comments I like "Cowboy".

I wrote a funny essay about my dog, entitled "My Dog Has Two Names" a
while back, you might enjoy reading it. It is at

story of my family as we acquire and attempt to name the new family
pet. Good luck with your pet!

Cynthia-ga,
Just to let you know that your comment has not gone unnoticed:
"Kitty" and "Mouse". What about adding a really big cat named "Max"
to the managerie?
I guess we all develop preconceptions about how individual GARs and
commenters may look; mine for the ladies all start out as potential
stars in Sex and the City (well, usually too intelligent for a role),
having to be adapted by revelations that slip in (did I get a shock
when one admitted wanting to lose 50 lbs!).
But I dunno - two chihuahuas ... ??? ;)

I wonder what the puppy at the start of this question was actually named?
