Question ID: 485043
How do I request a leave of absence, what is the appropriate wording for it?
I work in a small private business(a store) with less than 50
employees in Chicago, Il. I'm 27 years old and have been working there for 5 years.
I need about 2 months to go abroad to marry my fiance and apply for
her immigration papers so she can come here and leave with me.
From my research I understand this situation is not covered by the
Family and Medical Leave Act(FMLA), are there any other laws or common
sense rules governing this matter?

We have been in a relationship for a few years already and my boss knows my
intention to marry her. My request will be most likely verbal since I
see my boss every day and the atmosphere at work is not very casual.
How should I approach him ?
Thank you,
Kris.

Work is steadily busy throughout the year, winter holidays beeing the
busiest.(I plan my leave for the coming spring or summer).
Yes, mostly he would have to replace me, but the job doesn't require
any degree or a lot of experience.

I actually meant the atmosphere at work is not very formal (more
casual) - we all know each other, share details about families,
personal problems, etc.

Unpaid Leave

I suggest that you choose your dates carefully
- a time when you know things are not too busy.

If the boss has a secretary, it might be wise to talk to her first

I hope you are not doing anything daft.

Would he have to replace you?
