I am researching National Parks in the UK for an academic paper and
want to present a discussion aimed at the fact that National Parks in

Dear elen023-ga

You haven?t specified which sites you have already looked at, so I
hope that I do not refer you to some you have already viewed. These
sites will, I believe, provide you with information on the subject,
especially the first site.

For England and Wales, DEFRA have carried out a in-depth review of the
National Parks and the review is now under consideration by interested
parties. The detailed review is available on these links:

"Review of National Park Authorities was launched by the Rt Hon Alun
Michael MP, Minister for Rural Affairs, on 13 July 2002. It recommends
more than 50 actions to improve the stewardship of some of our finest
landscapes."
http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-countryside/consult/natpark/summary.pdf
http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-countryside/consult/natpark/

Other sources are:
The Association of National Park Authorities (ANPA)
"The Association of National Park Authorities exists to provide the
National Park Authorities (NPAs) with a single voice, particularly
when dealing with government and its agencies. The Association
provides a focus for collaborative working and corporate activity at
home and abroad and the sharing of best practice. ANPA also attempts
to increase public understanding of the statutory purposes for which
National Parks exist in the UK, and to promote them as models for
sustainable development"
http://www.anpa.gov.uk/template_home.asp?PageID=155&LanguageID=1
The site carries a lot of information and comments on the DEFRA review
and carries a useful list of links.

The Council for National Parks
"The Council for National Parks (CNP) is the charity that works to
protect and enhance the National Parks of England and Wales and areas
that merit National Park status, and promote understanding and quiet
enjoyment of them for the benefit of all."
http://www.cnp.org.uk/CNP.htm
Again, contains useful information and links. These included details
of each of the National Park. I haven?t visited each site but they may
contain relevant information.

Thank you for the suggested sites and sources of information. However,
I was hoping to find more in terms of nature conservation and how
well/not at all do National Parks serve this purpose, hence the
discussion that the Parks are neither national nor parks. I did not
rate the answer yet.

Dear elen023-ga
Thank you for your clarification. It helped me to understand your
exact requirements. Having said that, I didn?t find much more
information specifically on the subject of nature conservation and the
failure of National Parks. Those resources I did find, often referred
back to the DEFRA report and other resources already supplied , or
concentrated on economic and business use of the areas, or threat of
wind farms on the surrounding areas.

One review which may be of assistance is the Review of the National
Park Authorities of Wales ? it contains criticism and observations on
certain failures of Welsh National Park authorities.

While there may not be information collated nationally, there may be
information available for each individual National Park. Each National
Park issues an annual report and business review plan. I have not
examined these in any great detail but they may contain acknowledged
failures and criticisms. Some example sites:

I?m sorry that I have been unable to find what you were hoping for.
Neveretheless, I hope that these are of assistance. Perhaps there is a
need for your paper to address these matters.
