Hi ciao!! Meiosis: "Meiosis is the process of cell division in germ line cells to form gametes. This process furthers sexual reproduction because each gamete has half the number of chromosomes of normal cells, so that when two gametes (one from each parent) combine, the correct number of chromosomes is preserved in the resulting zygote organism. This process is unlike mitosis, where the cells are simply replicated, preserving the number chromosomes." From "The process of Meiosis": http://www.brown.edu/Courses/BI0032/gentherp/meioIB.html Meiosis is a division of a germ cell that involvs two fissions of the nucleus and giving rise to four gametes, or sex cells. Each of the resulting gametes has half the number of chromosomes of the original cell. The process includes the two stages of nuclear division (meiosis I and II), usually accompanied by cell division. Each stage encompasses four stages: -Meiosis I: Prophase I Metaphase I Anaphase I Telophase I -Meiosis II: Prophase II Metaphase II Anaphase II Telophase II For a brief and "easy words" explanation of each phase please refer to the following pages, they have exactly what you want: I recommend the following pages at San Diego Unified School District website "Meiosis I": http://www2.sandi.net/uchs/AP.BIOLOGY/1997-98/Meiosis/Meiosis2.html and "Meiosis II": http://www2.sandi.net/uchs/AP.BIOLOGY/1997-98/Meiosis/Meiosis3.html Other good source is "Step-by-Step Meiosis" at Springfield Technical Community College: http://distance.stcc.edu/BIOL102/Lectures/lesson9/stepbystep.htm ------------------ For further insight, refer to the following pages: "Meiosis" at PinkMonkey.com:(RECOMMENDED) This is a comprehensive but easy to understand multipage process' description. Remember to follow the 'nest page' links at bottom. http://www.pinkmonkey.com/studyguides/subjects/biology-edited/chap6/b0606301.asp "Meiosis Tutorial": (RECOMMENDED) Visit each phase's page from frame menu. http://www4.ncsu.edu/unity/users/b/bnchorle/www/index.htm "CELL DIVISION: MEIOSIS AND SEXUAL REPRODUCTION": http://www.emc.maricopa.edu/faculty/farabee/BIOBK/BioBookmeiosis.html "Meiosis" at About.com: See the complete set of four pages. http://biology.about.com/library/weekly/aa092100a.htm "Meiosis" at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meiosis ----------------------------------------------------------- I hope that this helps you. Feel free to request for a clarification if you find something unclear or think that the answer must be improved in some part. I will be glad to respond your requests for further assistance on this topic. Regards. livioflores-ga |
