I'm assuming you're using an Apple computer. In any case, you can use
your IPod in hard drive mode. See the following movie

http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/tutorial/ip_gettingstarted_t11.html

I don't have an IPod, but I belive that in hard drive mode, you can
access all the files in the IPod hard drive. Therefore, it just
becomes copying files from one hard drive (IPod) to another (your
computers hard drive).

Hope that helps.

Hi There,

Because the ipod uses a special filing system for their music
organization it is difficult to simply use it as a hard drive and
re-copy your music back to your computer. For this reason, I believe
you can use a program called CopyPod to take your own mp3's you
originally loaded onto your ipod and transfer them back to your
computer. Search Google for the CopyPod program and download it to
see if it works for you.
Please post and let me know how this works.

Sherwinb-ga is right. It seems that you can not just copy music files
from your IPod to your computer. Now why they would do this is beyond
me. As for copying files back to your computer you can use CopyPod
(http://www.copypod.net/, 14.50 USD) or SharePod
(http://www25.brinkster.com/carmagt/SharePod/, free/donation) which

"reads your iPod database and allows you to extract music files to
your hard drive, either individually or by playlist".

Hope that solves your problem.

I use my iod with my PC, so if you do too, here's how you would do it
(WindowsXP Home SP2):

Plug in your iPod, and make sure disk mode is enabled in the iTunes options menu.

Open My Computer and find your iPod, then go into it.

Next, in the My Computer menu bar, click tools, then Folder Options.

Click the View tab, and look for the radio button that says "show
hidden files and folders" click that, then OK.

there should now be a folder labeled iTunes_control (im doing this
from memory, so it may be wrong, but the folder will be fuzzy cause
its hiddden normally.)

inside that, there should be another folder, go there. you should now
be in a foler that has maybe a hundred different folders in it.
inside these are all your songs, randomly shuffled and split up.

what you can do now is open the Search bar, click find music, make
sure "search subfolders" is clicked, then hit search.

all your music should now be listed ion the search box, copy it, then
paste it back into your iTunes music folder on your main hard drive.
it may take a while depending on how many files you have and how fats
your computer is.

then go back to itunes, hit, "add folder" in the file menu, and select
the folder where you transfered all your music to. it should add it
all to your library, and your done!

PS--i can clarify more if i was at my own computer, and make sure ive
said everything right....so ask me to if you still need help)

If you are a mac user, you can view the hidden files (songs) on your
iPod viewing all hidden files. You can do this by opening the
terminal (if you don't know where it is, just search). A prompt
screen will appear with "YourName's Computer" etc. type the following
lines to show/hide hidden files. (every imaginable file will show up:
this is normal)

Show all folders/files:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder

Set back to default:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
killall Finder

Your music will be in iPod control, or something, and then music, and
then sprinkled in lots and lots of different files randomly). You can
now retrieve it, and reset your computer to default mode. Don't fool
around with the hidden files to much though. Most are hidden for good
reason.
