A shot in the dark:
Canada has been/is a goal for many Hong Kong emigrants - the
Commonwealth connection. Vancouver is a lot closer, of course, but if
there was a small Chinese community in Scarborough, it would be a
natural place for immigrants to go, snowballing as the community
expanded and the word got back to HK.

Hi Garyking...

Most of the Chinese people in the GTA are actually residing in
Markham. The second biggest area is in Chinatown in Toronto.

Although I live north of Toronto, I do commute in and work in Scarborough.
Seems to me, there is more of an influx of Sri Lankans in Scarbough.

There are many, many Chinese in the area that I live in; there are
especially a lot in the schools, but you are right in that there are
lots of Sri Lankans, Indians, etc. as well.

I rarely see any caucasians around here, actually.

Ghetto mentality

- plus I heard from friends that prior to 1997 Chinese guys were
turning up and saying
'I want to buy house now'

Then opening a suitcase containing /very/ good currency

I suspect these tales are true, 1994-1997 was a worrying time.
