"Talk to the hand" and the similar "tell it to the hand" are African-American slang expressions, sometimes part of a longer phrase such as "Talk to the hand, 'cuz the face ain't listenin'." I believe the first use of the phrase in a widespread entertainment medium was by Joan Rivers, who used "talk to the hand" as a sarcastic catchphrase when she was hosting The Late Show from 1986-1987: "When comedienne Joan Rivers would get angry with someone, she'd stick her hand in his face and holler, "Talk to the hand. My ears aren't listening!" Self Help Centers http://www.selfhelpcenters.com/chiro.asp In 1997, the phrase appeared in a Fran Drescher movie, "The Beautician and the Beast": "The Beautician and the Beast has already established a niche in comedic cinematic history, being the origin of the culturistic 'talk to the hand' rage which swept the country." Timothy Dalton's Authorized Internet Site http://www.timothydalton.com/ The line showed up in "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" in 1999: "Dr. Evil: Talk to the hand 'cause the face don't wanna hear it." Garner's Classics http://www.garnersclassics.com/qaustin2.htm "Talk to the hand" was repopularized by the 2003 movie "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines": "Schwarzenegger gets to total cars and deliver deadpan understatements like 'We need a new vehicle,' and he's constantly in search of the right pair of shades. He has an absurdist comeback in one scene: 'Talk to the hand." Slate http://slate.msn.com/id/2085101/ Google search strategy: Google Web Search: "talk to the hand" origin OR origins ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22talk+to+the+hand%22+origin+OR+origins I hope this is helpful. If anything is unclear or incomplete, please request clarification; I'll gladly offer further assistance, and you won't have to talk to the hand. Best regards, pinkfreud |
