Rather than the following 500 watt wind generator which involves a lot of steel.Have you plans for a small but efficient wind generator.Perhaps using sheet metal(cheaper).Or a wooden frame (easier to build).Holding bearings, some sort of light weight blades.Any ideas please,I will pay fee for informative websites. The following involves a lot of work I think:Description The Windpower Generator is fabricated of steel and It is composed of a 24 inch long steel frame on which a 27inch long, 3/4 inch diameter shaft is mounted on pillow block bearings. On one end of the shaft is attached the hub onto which two, 36 inch long blades are attached, creating a 6 foot diameter rotor with an area of over 240 square inches. The blades are made from galvanized steel tubing and 24 gauge galvanized sheet steel. On the other end of the shaft is attached a 10 inch diameter pulley. Below the frame and under the pulley is mounted a 12 volt, 60 amp automotive alternator. |

Problem with a small wind turbine is that you need a LOT of wind. The reason they are so big is because it takes a lot of propeller/wing/turbine AREA to get much power out of it. |

Jaspira (www.shield.fi/turbine.html) is building small wind turbines using metallic foils. Windside (www.winside.com) builds similar shaped turbines but uses heavier blades. Energy & Sustainable development magazine published a review of "wind turbines of another kind" in issue n°4 and provides news about cleaner energy solutions worldwide. Go to eBay and search on "brakedrum windmill". Ohojim sells these plans. I don't like wind or solar panels because they put out too few watts for the money. You should install a generator based system as described here... www.electricitybook.com. Bill |

Q: Please suggest a smaller way of making a wind turbine. A: Instead of a turbine, perhaps a small windmill would work better. Here is one... -- Introducing a new vertical axis windmill design for urban and rural applications for home, lawn and garden. Applications include: Domestic water pumping, pond aeration, fountains, garden irrigation, bird bath fountains, powered wind chimes, and wind driven lawn ornaments. Figs. 1 shows a windmill in which the tower turns with the rotor. An output pulley at the base delivers rotary power directly to the air compressor at ground level. The bottom bearing rests in gimbals supported by two stakes driven into the ground. The windmill can be raised or lowered by one person in less than a minute. This model has a 15' rotor and weighs approximately 75 lbs. including the tower. It is portable and is sometimes used for remote drainage, irrigation, and aeration. Fig. 2 shows a pond aeration system. Three piston pumps provide a continuous flow of air to an air stone in the pond. The entire windmill pump system weighs less than 20 lbs. The tower is thirty five feet high. Fig. 3 shows another configuration whereby the power shaft from the rotor runs through the center of a stationary tower column. The output is at the base as in the previous example. Fig. 4 is of a pivoting A-frame type tower operating a double diaphragm air pump located at the top of the tower. Many transmission systems and tower arrangements can be easily adapted to this design. Double click on the drawing for generator mounting detail from the available plans. -- http://www.greenwindmill.com/ -- Hope that was helpful. Regards, MiniM |
