How many persons are serving in the US Armed Forces today to include
Reserve and National Guard Troops? Of that number how many are women?
How many are Black/African American? How many are Latino? How many are
Native American? How many Arab, Asian & other? How are those numbers
represented by service branch? Finally, where did they join from; what
are the numbers from each state? |

jwp21-ga,
There is a great deal of information available on the make-up of US
Forces. However, very little of it can precisely answer your
questions.
You can find SOME of the data you're looking for, but I doubt that ALL
of it can be located at as fine a level of detail as you've asked for.
For starters, most of the ethnic/racial demographic data for the
military dates back to 2002-2003 at the most recent.
Fairly detailed statistics are available. For instance, I can tell
you that in 2002 there were 666 Native American Indians in the Army,
and 1,441 in the Navy. Similar stats are available for the Marine
Corps and the Air Force, and cover more than 20 ethnic categories.
I can also break out current enlistments by states.
But I can't tell you what states these Indians came from. Nor can I
find exactly equivalent information for the reserves.
If you want to hold out for every type of information you requested,
that is, of course, your perogative. But I think it highly unlikely
that anyone will be able to produce all the stats you've asked for.
On the other hand, if you would like to have refereneces and summary
information for the best available demographic information on the
military -- along with links to the full documents -- I'd be happy to
attempt to answer your question.
Let me know what you think.

Per your concerns, 2002 - 2003 time frame is OK. I do not require 20
ethnic categories. The top five should suffice. It doesn't matter what
particular state a Native American came from but I do want numbers of
service members from each state so I can see the total number broken
down as what percent from each state. Just ask if you need more
clarity.

Hello jwp21-ga,
Haven't forgotten you, but it turns out there are different sources
with different numbers. I just want to make sure I understand the
whys and wherefors of the differences before posting them here.
Hope to have an answer for you in a day or so if your question is
still unanswered at that time.

Hi pafalafa-ga,
I appreciate your patience and will be grateful for your findings.
Different sources with different numbers was just one of the things
making me crazy when I was looking. I found huge disparities in Latino
information. If it's possible we should try to keep the source
material compatible - or maybe average it out. Your search for clarity
isn't going unnoticed. Thank you.

jwp21-ga,
Whew...trying to figure out what's what in the military's data
presentations is more than I bargained for.
I'm not sure if I'll be able to get things sorted out adequately. But
in the mean time, I wanted to at least make you aware of some of the
key sources of information out there. That way, you can have a look,
and see if anything jumps out as especially useful to you:
http://www.dod.mil/prhome/poprep2002/
Population Representation in the Military Services
http://www.dior.whs.mil/mmid/M01/fy03/m01fy03.pdf
Department of Defense
SELECTED MANPOWER STATISTICS
FISCAL YEAR 2003
Section 1 of the above report, in particular, includes DOD-wide
numbers that may be of special interest.
I'll let you know if I can turn up anything more useful on your
question. In the mean time, have a look at the above, and let me know
what you think.
Thanks,
paf

Hi paf -
If it were easy everybody'd be doing it. The website is pretty good
but not as clear or defined as I'd hoped for; the pdf helps some too.
If that's the best we can get it'll be OK. What about the "enlistment
by state" information? I could have missed it but I don't think it was
in either of these pieces.
Thanks,
