Hello bugbear-ga,

With the assistance of my colleague, THX1138, I?m confident that I
have a complete answer for you on the proper pronunciation for
?Erdos?, the famous Hungarian mathematician. The Merriam-Webster
Online Dictionary provides an audio file so you can hear the name for
yourself. While searching for Hungarian pronunciation guides I came
across a selection of audio files that will give you a good exposure
to the sound of Hungarian. I?ve also included some additional
resources about the Hungarian alphabet, language and pronunciation
guides. My search also revealed that there are more and more audio
resources available on the Web (like the dictionary) that might be
worth using in future research.

Please don?t hesitate to ask for clarification if any of this is confusing.

All the best.

Here's a newsgroup post that seems to be authoritative, if one accepts
the writer's claim to have spoken with Erdos himself on the matter:

"Here is the correct pronunciation as taught me by Erdos himself.
After writing it down, I verified it with another Hungarian
mathematician who has been a close friend of Paul's for more decades
than she would admit.

Er: similar to the English word 'air' but the 'r' is rolled briefly.
It is hard for English speakers like me to roll the 'r' without
    creating a pseudo-syllable between this one and the next;
    however this is essential.

dos: (there is a long Hungarian umlaut on the 'o', in TeX: \H)
the sound is similar to the English 'ersh' though not exactly.
The long accent makes the 'er' fairly long.

The accent is on the first syllable.

His first name is actually Pal (accent on the 'a') pronounced 'Pahl',
but practically everyone calls him 'Paul' with the English
pronunciation."

Hello bugbear-ga,

I?m a native Hungarian speaker and I?m not surprised about the
confusion on how to pronounce Erd?s Pál?s name. It?s a difficult
language with and alphabet that?s not easy for non-native speakers to
pronounce. I have fun asking friends to wrap their tongues around
?gyönyör??.

I?ve found some resources that include audio files to help you grasp
what I mean. I?m posting this as a comment because I haven?t been able
to find an audio file to pronounce Erd?s Pál for you.

Enjoy!
