Hello there! I would like to download a streaming real media file to my hard disk. I'm using a Windows 2000 machine. How to go about it? The location of file is rtsp://realmedia.freespeech.org/new/ar_roy_damage.rm/ar_roy_damage.rm (http://www.freespeech.org/fsitv/fscm2/contentviewer.php?content_id=686). If you can provide me with the file that would be great. Thanks and Best Regards, DKA. |

dka, I just downloaded the file to my hard drive, closed the source window, and am now watching it. It's narrated by a girl and has many images of water in the beginning. If you don't already have the Real Player, you will need it. Use the link that goodinformation-ga provided to download and install the Real Media Player - BASIC edition. Go to: http://www.real.com/player/realplayer_intl.html?lang=en&loc=au&src=intl_au-home,011404intl_enau_choice 1. Download the free "basic player" to your desktop. Click the link that is orange on the bottom right to initiate the download. 2. Install the basic player by clicking on the file named " RealPlayer10-5GOLD.exe " Now, you have the right program to watch it on your computer. Note, after the Real Player is installed, you can LEFT CLICK on the link and watch it as soon as it is finished downloading. It might even start to play while it's downloading, but could stop intermittently if it's not finished transferring (buffering) to your computer. On dial-up, that might be up to a half hour. I have cable so it was done in about 5 seconds. HERE'S HOW TO DOWNLOAD THE FILE TO WATCH AT YOUR CONVENIENCE: RIGHT CLICK on the [WATCH] text on the lower link you provided. http://www.freespeech.org/fsitv/fscm2/contentviewer.php?content_id=686 RIGHT CLICKING brings up some options in a menu. You want to select "SAVE LINK AS" -or- "SAVE TARGET AS" (they both do the same thing) --Be sure you save the link to the desktop so you can find it easily. Allow the download to complete. NEXT, you can watch the clip at your leisure by clicking on the saved file named " RAMGEN.RAM " on your desktop. The Real Player will open and automatically play the file for you. It is 49 minutes long, and quite interesting. You can move or delete it after you watch it. If you need more help, please ask via the Request For Clarification" feature. ~~Cynthia |

I don't think that's what he meant, goodinformation-ga. I think he's asking how to download a streaming video to his hard drive and watch it later, without streaming it again. Hope this helps. http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/record-streaming-video-windows-media-and-real-video.htm |

Keep in mind that with streaming media you will not be able to save the file to disk. Streaming media is where the server streams the content on demand, such as radio,tv, etc. broadcasts. The reason that you are able to save the above file is bacuse the file you are referring to is not a true streaming content. It is a file on the remote server that Real Player opens. Therefore, "Save Target As" will not work on true streaming media. So the "Save Target As" solution is an exception, rather than the rule. For example, you will not be able to save the following content to your hard drive, without the programs listed on my previous posts link. http://click.real.com/?clipid=142140&pageid=movies.pachinko.result |

Often if the "right-click/save as" ability has been disabled you can dig the file out of your cache! Both IE and Firefox work for this, not sure about other browsers. It should be easy to find your IE cache, then sort it by size and you should see your file. In Firefox you type about:cache in the address field and then select the disk cache link, then you get a list of the files. Now you can search by suspected/known file name, extension, website address, etc and then click the files link. Then you can right-click/save as or use a download manager to get the file in a folder of your choice. |

gooberoo, Thanks for that info, I use Firefox. I haven't had a need to browse the cache since I started using it a couple months ago, and appriciate you posting that shortcut! I made a note of it. ~~Cynthia |
