Dear turner08-ga,

The General Register Office maintains the central index for marriages.
The index, however, is a number of months behind. The site advises
that "If the event for which you require a certificate has taken place
in the last 18 months, you should contact the register office at which
the details were recorded, or, in the case of a marriage, the register
office, church or other religious building at which the details were
recorded, as our central records may not have been updated."

The Register Office for Sheffield is :

The Sheffield Register Office
The Town Hall
Pinstone Street
Sheffield
S1 2HH
Tel: 0114 203 9423
Email: registeroffice@sheffield.gov.uk
Web site: http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/register-office/where-we-are

This link is to the printable form to request a copy of a Marriage Certificate.
http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/EasySite/lib/serveDocument.asp?doc=16641&pgid=2757
You will note that it requires specific information, and an
explanation as to your relationship and as to why it is being
requested. The site not disclose if any other person is entitled to a
copy of the certificate. You may have to inquire at the Register
Office.

If they were married in a church or other religious building you would
have to apply there.

If you do not know these details and it is not at the Sheffield
Register Office, you could try the GRO site and make a postal
application in case it is in their index. Otherwise, you will have to
wait for it to appear in their index and you will be able to search
for it online.

Finally, there is a chance it was in the local papers, but searching
for it would be a very time consuming exercise at a Sheffield library
or newspaper office.

I hope this answers your question. If it does not, or the answer is
unclear, then please ask for clarification of this research before
rating the answer. I shall respond to the clarification request as
soon as I receive it.
Thank you
