Around 2000-2001 there are some references on the web about an
Canadian company "Aluminium Power Inc" (related to Trimol Group)
developing comercial aluminium oxygen fuel cells. Aparently these fuel
cells were able to achieve much grater energy density than for
instance LiIon cells (800-4000Kwh/kg). I even found a company claiming
to use them.

However I cannot find any recent reference about that.
The questions are: What happened to this company (aluminium power
inc)? What happened to this technology? Is it really usable and
achieves the described performance? (or was just something like
cold fusion?) Is anyone making these cells comercially?

However I wonder why all the links about Al fuel cells have
dissapeared (including the website of that company)? I do not know any
fuel cell or other source of energy comming even close to 800Wh/kg
(LiIon is about 100-200 Wh/kg). Either the publish data was not true
(but than why another company claimed to use them succesfully) or the
results were too good and became classified research or whatever. I
want to know what the exact results were and if these cells can still
be used (for example in underwater robotics) - where cost is not so
important, given the other alrenatives to obtain the same energy.

Trimol group has discontinued research and development in Aluminum
fuel cells, because thay decided that this metal was too expensive and
they could not build competitive fuel cells for stationary or vehicles
applications. However, al fuel cells can be used for example in
underwater crafts. Other companies are developing metal-air fuel
cells, with zinc. Arotech (electric fuel) is one of these.

evionyx of NY USA got on 18 aug 2004 a goverment contract to develop
al-air fuel cells. See thei site www.evionyx.com
