Why would you want to do that? Cynthia-ga, what are you referring to? This link that you provided: http://www.ihelpyouservices.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6798 talks about "a Website that returns altered Web pages to search engines crawling the site" which is NOT what he is asking. The second link that you have provided: http://searchenginewatch.com/sereport/article.php/2165231 talks about how "you show the search engine something different than what you show a user", which is NOT what he is asking. cynthia-ga, how are the links that you have posted have ANY relevance to the question? I believe you have misinterpreted the term cloaking and have not fully read the question. And changing your IP address is perfectly legal. You can contact your local law enforcement or the FBI to verify this. Cynthia-ga, what are you referring to when you state "As far as hiding your IP for other reasons"? dab2061-ga did not ask about hiding his IP address, he asked about CHANGING it. Please clarify your links, statements and accusations of "illegal or unethical activities." I believe you owe dab2061-ga an apology for the false accusations that you have made. |

neutron, I listed those links for a reason. I can think of plenty of reasons why changing your IP could be used for less than pure reasons. I have personally been the recipient of wrong-doings and illegal computer intrusions from an online stalker that "CHANGED" his IP (among other things) to avoid detection and prosecution. |

I have nothing illegal in mind, I belong to a few message boards that only allow one user/screen name per IP number and was trying to get around that so I could have multiple screen names. |

Cynthia, this is a quote from the second link: 'The "Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?" question that Google suggests you ask yourself in its guidelines is excellent advice and clearly follows on what Perkins preaches.' The answer to the question is an uneuqiocal "yes". I am sorry to hear you had trouble in the past, but I am not a stalker or hacker of any kind, my motives are "impish" at worst. |

dab2061, Thanks so much for the explanation. Maybe I'm paranoid, at a minimum incredibly suspicious...! Please forgive me. ~~Cynthia |

cynthia, the reasons for changing your IP is no different then changing your phone number. One being, to get away from harassment. I changed my IP once because someone was trying to hack my computer, over a 1000 times in a weeks period. Greg www.mooretechservices.com |

cynthia-ga, you can not change your IP address and "avoid detection and prosecution." Every IP address leads to some system. If your first IP address leads to your system, and if you change your IP address, that address is also going to lead to your system. Your local law enforcement can contact the ISP of the IP issuer and get a name/address of the IP holder. Now you can avoid detection by going through some kind of proxy server, but it's probably going to keep some sort of IP logs. So those logs can be investigated by law enforcement and the true IP of the offender can be found. Or you can hack a system and conduct your communications through that system. But it's only a matter of time before law enforcement traces down the hacked system. Once they do that, they can just secretly track who is connecting to that system. Or you can spoof your IP address, but that is only useful for denial of service attacks, and not really communications. Have you contacted your local law enforcement about "wrong-doings and illegal computer intrusions from an online stalker"? They should be able to trace the activities back to that person. |

dab2061-ga, if you can forward the details of how you connect to the internet and your network configuration, for example: cable modem->linksys router->Windows XP ->Mac I can give you details on how to change your IP address. It won't be internally, you will be changing the IP address that you connect to the internet. I believe this is what you need in order to get around message board restrictions. |

AHHH finally, this is what I'm looking for, I guess I should not have used the term "internally!.............I have a cable modem through optimum, and I am running windows xp......thank you neutron and once again let me assure everyone that I am not up to anything illegal |

Optimum Cable modems are trouble when it comes to IP changes. I used to have this configuration. Optimum Cable Modem->Linksys Router->Win XP The only way I could change my IP address was to use the MAC address clone functionality of my Linksys router. I have Verizon DSL currently, so I can't try methods of obtaining a different IP address without a router. I'll make a guess on how to charge your IP address, give it a try. 1) Click Start->Run 2) type "cmd" (no quotes, goes for subsequent steps also) 3) on the dos window type "ipconfig /release all" 4) Press the reset button on your cable modem 5) Pull the plug of the cable modem, wait about 2 minutes, and reinsert it 6) After the lights go on on your cable modem, in the previous dos window type "ipconfig /renew all" I doubt it will work, but you can give it a try. If that doesn't work, you can try using a proxy to connect to your message board. If you want, I can give you instructions on how to do this. |

Thanks neutron! I appreciate the information. Come to think of it I have changed my IP to avoid that stalker, many times. But even that was not enough. In my case, I had to abandon a former user name, and abandon former haunts online, and I move my domicile because he started sending me things. I had to change everything so I could not be located by my username, habits or ISP. And neutron, I think your comment on another Q about MS Word is priceless. ..."I seriously doubt this is a virus. When people don't understand a certain problem, they immediately blame viruses, including me. Having said that, it might still be a virus..." That really made my day. |

Didn't work Neutron, came back "operation failed as no adapter in the state is permissable for this type of action". I used to be able to click something on and get my ip address and change the number, thats what I'm trying to do now, does the "proxy" require another computer? |

dab2061-ga, type in "ipconfig /all" and report back the results here. You can block out the section saying IP address for privacy reasons. |

On the subject of proxy servers see: http://www.proxy4free.com/tips.html http://www.its.uq.edu.au/helpdesk/guides/www/browser/win/lan/ie6/ http://www.guidescope.com/gman/bi5p.htm In the address section of the internet explorer proxy section you would type one of these http://www.proxy4free.com/page1.html in a "IP address:port" style. Such as "61.9.198.7:8080" |

"dab2061-ga, type in "ipconfig /all" and report back the results here." I've done that, nothing happens, am I suppose to hit a key after typing that in? I tried hitting enter and nothing happened |

Sorry, probably should have given full instructions. 1) Click Start->Run 2) type "cmd" (no quotes, goes for subsequent steps also) 3) on the dos window type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfiglog.txt", Enter 4) Close the dos window. 5) Go to your C: drive, Open ipconfiglog.txt, cut and paste the results back to this post. 6) You can delete the ipconfiglog.txt file. You can ,and probably should, block out the section saying IP address for privacy reasons. |
