Is it true that anyone can be a repo agent without any schooling or
internship. I was told that a repoman can buy a wrecker and start
repoing the next day or just repo with car keys. How can I find out?

There is a website www.procra.com where you can register and talk to
repo agents nationwide. They have a repo agent directory so you can
find an agent in your particular state and send them a question if
they are not online to chat with. The laws vary by state but the very
most any state requires is a certification course and a license (along
with insurance and bond). Yes there are many states where there is no
monitoring at all and those are the states where just anyone can do it
without answering to anyone. Many do not even carry the insurance or
bond. Go see what the repo agents over at www.procra.com can tell you
about your particular state repo laws or regulations.

Recovery agents need to be either insured or bonded. Me and my
husband own a recovery agency and the state in which our buisness is
(Kansas) does not require any license or certificate. It all depends
on the state in which you live.

We, http://www.nsrecovery.com, also repo in NC and we have no
licensing or state laws except for 'no breach of peace' either. One of
the biggest problems in the repo industry is smaller banks & finance
companies, buy here pay here car lots, and title loan companies NOT
requiring repo insurance, bonding, certification or continuing
education of any sort. There is a new organization called REACT,
http://www.reactnet.org They do background checks on ALL of their
members (repo agencys), DMV checks, must all be certified, proof of
insurance, they only charge about 350.00/year to be a member and that
is the perfect place for lenders to find PROFESSIONAL repo
companies...IF THEY WILL USE IT. If we could ever get lenders to ONLY
use qualified repo companies then we could get rid of the cowboys that
think they are repomen. Lenders would be less liable so they lose
absolutely nothing. You can read more about REACT at
http://www.procra.com

I want everyone to know that if you don't have insurance to repo in
the state of texas that if you repo now with out insurance your days
are comeing to a end. i have been repoing for about 20 years and most
all the repo agents in the dallas area know me as a very good agent
and they know i can get the job done. that's not the problem. the
problem is that if you don't have prior insurace for the last three
years you wan't get insurance. and if you get lucky they will insure
you for about 20-k a year. now my deal is i had insurance for a long
time when i was doing work for all the banks and ect: but i had a one
account that really treated me well and never said anything about the
fees so i put all my eggs in one basket and it work for several years
but now they have growed so much i can't do all the work so they took
on a few more agents to help and they wanted insurance from them and
out of the blue they told me i needed to get insurance. well i said no
problem. well its been 3 weeks in trying to find someone to get
insurance from and no one want's to add on anymore new adventures even
though i have a very good track record and no claims for th elast 20
years . so now i'm jobless so if you want to be a repo agent in texas
this is going to be a hard road. plus this is because all the so, so
big recovery agents is the reason why its this way now. they want to
put the small guy out of buiness and they can have the repo market all
to there self. if your not in the books now your better off trying to
do something else. like me'' i'm going to write a book on how not to
get your car repoed.
