My son has a stigma in his eye and has been told by his eye doctor to wear a patch for 9 weeks. I want to know exactley what I am dealing with. What is this stigma doing to his eye sight? Also they said it is growing at the rate of a 40 year old and he is only 7 if this doesn't work he will have to have surgery. Is he really going to have to have surgery? Is there anything I can do? |

I was unable to locate any condition of the eye called a "stigma." Did you mean astigmatism? If so, maybe one of the following links will be helpful. If not, perhaps you could clarify your question. All surgical procedures will have a name, so get the name of the surgical procedure that your child's eye doctor said might become necessary. You can then do a search on the Internet for that procedure by its name to learn more. Yes, I was meaning astigmatism. Could you please answer my question about is there anything I can do for my son? Is it neccassary for him to have surgery? It is true a stigmatism can grow at this rate? ( the doctor sais it's growing at the rate of a 40 year olds.) Will the eye patch be helpful? Does he need to wear it for the recommended 9 weeks? I want to do whatever I can to help my son. I just don't know what to do. |

Mommagoose, Google Answers is not a place where you can receive authoritative medical advice. But if a doctor were to tell me that an eye patch and surgery were first-line measures for a child with astigmatism, I would find another doctor. Please get a second opinion, preferably from a board-certified ophthalmologist (not an optometrist or optician). |
