As a former singer and actress, I can tell you that you're not going
to be able to quit your job and make a sudden career as a singer. No
matter how good you are.
First things first: Go out and get singing lessons. Even if you're a
natural born singer, lessons will benefit you in that you'll
understand singing technique so you can avoid the problems that plague
so many singers when they go on tour. (Sore throats, fatigue, nodes,
etc.) In addition, a good teacher will be able to help guide your
career with advice about how to perform on stage, how to work with
musicians, etc.
Also, get on stage. It doesn't matter where. Open mic nights at clubs
or restaurants are a great place to start. Sing at the local fair,
sing "The Star Spangled Banner" at the local high school football
games, sing at people's weddings...you name it. All that experience
(even though you probably won't be paid), will help you develop as an
artist--and get you familiar with the realities of performing.
Once you have some experience under your belt, you can approach local
talent agents (Remember: they should never charge you money), audition
for local musical theatre, audition for nightclub gigs, etc. You'll
have to be persistent, but if you can sing and perform well, your
persistence will pay off. Even so, it's highly unlikely you'll be able
to make a living singing. It will probably take a number of years
before you could make a modest living singing in clubs, on cruise
ships, or in theatre. Only a very few singers make it big time, and
who "makes it" and who doesn't isn't necessarily based on talent. But,
if you really want a career singing, don't shrug from the hard work it
will take to get there. Embrace your dream! :)
Good luck!
