Dear Google

I'm buying new laptop computer and can't find any relevant comparison
among graphics cards. The problem is that I want high-end graphics on
the PCI Express for high definition gaming and not the most complex
CAD aplications, but there isn't any comparison among Radeon X300,
X600, and mobile workstation certified graphics cards like FireGL
V3200 or other FireGLs...

Are FireGLs convenient for gaming, do they support features like
Radeon Xs (POWERPLAY? Technology, SMARTSHADER?, etc)? Which of Radeon
Xs would be more appropriate? Is Radeon X300 strong enough? How about
Radeon X300 or X600 compared to Radeon 9600 or 9700 on AGP?

Thank you your answers.

Best regards

I have a FireGL T2 (128 mb) in my laptop. I can play all the latest
games and also use it for postprocessing large data files with
Tecplot. Also works great with 3D studio. Just a comment - if you
have a card like this I think you won't have problems. Although I do
find that the FireGL drivers for the laptops lag behind the drivers
for the cards which sell more like the Radeon series.

Just thought I would share my personal experience.

In general all cards can do a little of each specific application.
However some cards are built to be better in some areas than others.
For instance the MTECH D900T has three card options. The ATI X800 the
NVIDIA 6800 GO and the nVidia Quadro FX Go1400 with OpenGL . The ATI
Mobility Radeon x800( and nVidia GeForce Go 6800 are the same cost and
both perform about equal in games but fall behind in CAD areas The
1400 lags severely in games but is designed to really shine for the
engineer types who need true OpenGL. All work in each area but each
one is tailored to suit a specific need. ATI has alway been more
business application oriented, NVIDIA is game oriented and the OpenGL
is for the working professional using CAD and similar applications.
Check out these specs on all three and you will see that the Quadro
card which is $300 more expensive than the ATI or 6800. While more
expensive it has lower rating across the board. Not good for gamers
but the OpenGl makes it have a huge advantage in the engineering
arena. Follow this link for a page that shows all three specifications
for a better idea.
