Hi,

Let see you crack this one..

I am inquiring on behalf of a friend, whose child (14 years old)
became seriously (and critically) ill while on a trip to the US (New
York State) and the child had to be hospitalized for 2 weeks.

My friend and his child came from Belarus to visit the USA on a
non-immigrant visa.

He recently left the USA with over $100,000 US in unsettled bills with
the NY hospital. It is impossible for him to pay this off as he earns
only around $10,000 a year...

Now comes my question - is it true that as long as he tries to pay
some money, say like $100 a month back to NY state - he will be ok?
and can he keep on trying to pay off for the rest of his life?

What is the worst that can happen if he does not pay up??? Could he be
detained in his birth country of Belarus (it was his child and not him
getting the treatment in NY hospital)... Could he be denied further
visa from entering NY State or even the US?

Is there a different way this could be handled? Could he apply for
some kind of exception or maybe his government can pay this off?

Would his case be any different if he and his child was a citizen (or
permanent resident) of a different country, say Canada? And would they
cover the full amount?

Thanks.

Well if he does make attempts to pay it than it should only show up on
a credit report as slow pay. Now what that has to do with the fact
that he is not from this country, I do not know the specifics.
Although I do not think that he can be detained for this. As many
Americans can not afford thiers bills and do not become detained. But
I do not know if this will affect his entrance back into the country.
