I understand that EPA gave a waiver to MG to sell its 1980 MGB in the
United States without a catalytic converter because it was the last
year MG was making that model. I also understand that in most states
the emmissions standards for thw 1980 MGB are not the same as for
other 1980 cars with catalyitc converters.

Can someone track down and get me the specific waiver action documentation from EPA?

sconsetman-ga,

It would help a great deal to know where you're getting this
information from -- where did you hear about an EPA waiver for the
MGB, or about different state standards???

Not all imports are covered by emission control requirements -- there
are several categories of exemptions depending on the age of the car,
type of technology/fuel in use, specialized uses for the vehicle, etc.

For cars that are covered by the emission requirements, EPA can grant
waivers under a very restricted set of circumstances...I highly doubt
that a car line being in its last year of production would qualify as
meriting such a waiver.

As of right now, I'm inclinced to answer this question by saying that
no such waiver exists for the 1980 MGB, and documenting the reasons
why I believe this to be the case.

However, before doing so, I was hoping you could provide a bit of
additional information as to why you think such a waiver was ever
granted.

I'll wait a day or two before proceeding here, to see if you can
provide any additional information on all this.

Thanks.

I don't know for sure ...but, I have a 1979 MG Midget, 1500cc engine,
and it has a catalytic converter. Half of the parts books say that
1979 was the last year for the Sprite/Midget; a lot of sources on eBay
claim 1980 was the last year. good luck ...bill in corvallis
