Hi nreias,

You are probably referring to squamous epithelial calls, of which the
outer layer of skin, the epidermis, is composed. I'm assuming since the
subject of this question is "Skin cells" and wanted for a middle
school project, you are not interested in melanocytes or
keratinocytes. If you had wanted more specialized cells, please
request an Answer Clarification, and I'll be happy to assist you
further.

?The epithelium of the skin protects the underlying tissues from
·mechanical damage
·ultraviolet light
·dehydration
·invasion by bacteria?

?Epithelial tissues cover or line all body parts both externally and
internally. With cells tightly packed together and with little
intercellular space, the epithelial tissues form effective barriers
between underlying tissues and external media.?

Squamous (pavement) epithelium.
Squamous cells have the appearance of thin, flat plates. The shape of
the nucleus usually corresponds to the cell form and help to identify
the type of epithelium. Squamous cells, for example, tend to have
horizontall flattened, elliptical nuclei because of the thin flattened
form of the cell. They form the lining of cavities such as the mouth,
blood vessels, heart and lungs and make up the outer layers of the
skin.

There is no single type of skin cell. Keratinocytes predominate, and
mature into squamous cells. Melaoncytes are interspersed among these.
Langerhans cells and other types occur too.
Take a look at this reference:
