Question ID: 493851
I want to obtain a print of a painting, which -may- be called "Who
Killed the Bear?" It is painted in the style of C. M. Russell or
Frederick Remington, and I believe the original is an oil painting.

In a snowy mountain pass, towards dusk, a man raises one arm in
greeting as he approaches a scene of the aftermath of a violent
confrontation between a large brown bear and a man on the ground still
alive after the struggle. The man approaching holds a rifle in one
hand, his horse a few steps behind him. In the foreground, the bear
appears to be dead or dying while the man on the ground, alive but
mauled, looks toward the other man, perhaps 5 steps away.

The question is, of course, did the man who came upon the scene save
the other's life by killing the bear, or did he arrive too late to
change the outcome of the battle?

I have a very poor quality and small jpeg of this print, which I can
provide. I would like to obtain a print of this painting.

Dear barneym,

The painting after which that print was made is a work of the famous
Western painter Charles M. Russell, dating from 1915. Obviously, it is
indeed known by the title "Who killed the Bear?"

I could neither find any detailed reference to that painting, nor
seems there to be a current print of this particular painting
available. However, there are two framed prints of that painting
offered on eBay at the moment:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4009&item=3963996221
This one is a large print (20" x 30"). Currently, there is only one
single bid for the print ($9.95). The auction will end on 16 March.

This one seems to be a smaller print of unknown origin. There are no
bids at this moment ($14.95). The auction will end on 18 March.

I reall wish I could provide you a source for a modern print of this
painting; however, my research did not reveal any evidence that
currently prints of Russell's "Who killed the Bear?" are made by any
company. So I hope that knowing the artist's identity as well as the
paiting's year of origin and the probable title will be of help to you
in case you decide not to bid for one of the paints offered on eBay.
