I can't determine if this particular statement is true, but there is a book called "The Eudaemonic Pie" by Thomas Bass that describes the efforts of a California team that successfully built and used a Roulette shoe computer to win at Vegas casinos. Their computer took into account several parameters, including wheel friction, ball and wheel speed, and wheel tilt to predict which quadrant (not an individual slot) of the wheel the ball would likely fall into. The shoe-computer was only used a few times, but it performed quite well, according to Bass. |

Definitely true, There was a news story about such a cheat a few months ago, although can't seem to find the story now. The idea is to predict the probability of where the ball will fall, by measuring the speed of the ball and wheel. This is done my recording the time it takes for the ball to cross a point on the wheel. And since you can place bets on roulette until 3 spins of the ball, a bet is made after the measurement. Keep in mind that any electronic device that you bring in to US casinos that you use to predict such a probability is illegal. I believe there are certain countries where no such laws exist. That's why they got to keep the money in the news story I'm referring to. |

There have been several schemes to win at roulette by measuring the movement of the ball and wheel using devices hidden in shoes. This is called "wheel-clocking." I have found no reference to the person you mention, however. |
