A person who is deaf, but can sign and lip read, has just joined my
team - I am keen on tips for communication as well as links to courses
online or in person (in the UK) - either free or at a cost - as my
company is happy to pay for some courses.

Thanks

HI,
might try this site for a start: http://www.royaldeaf.org.uk/simple17.htm

Found it with "communicating with deaf" which turned up many other
sites that I did not pursue.

Good luck!

I have employed two people who were profoundly deaf over the years.

Provided I looked them in the face, they never had any problem in understanding me.

They were both super people: very kind and industrious.

Based on my experience, I would never hesitate to employ such folk.

Thanks probonopublico

It was more a question about how I should understand them - as this
person can only communicate by signing, and can not talk - so I am
really trying to find somewhere to learn sign language

thanks

Hi, Inshallah

One of the deaf people that I employed was also mute but she never had
any real problem in making herself understood. She was very expressive
and if necessary she would write.

In fact, 'signing' is not universally accepted as a great solution and
in Holland some experts consider it detrimental because it detracts
from other methods of communication which are more useful with people
who cannot sign. (At least, I think that that's their thinking.)

I would see how you get on before going down the signing route.

All the Best whatever you decide.
