Furniture retailer picks Mebane for large hub
Badcock is a private company with annual revenue estimated at $500
million; its market is limited to seven Southeast states.
Ken Smith, a furniture industry expert with BDO Seidman in High Point,
said Badcock has tended to stay in smaller, more rural markets. He
predicted the company will face significant competition from existing
independent furniture stores primarily operating in small towns.
As a furniture retailer, Badcock has more than 320 stores across the
Southeast. It already has distribution centers in Alabama, Florida and
Georgia. It's opening a fourth because of company growth; Badcock sets
a goal of product delivery within a five-hour drive time of its
stores, said Mike Whitten, director of dealer development.
Whitten said the company competes with Rooms To Go Inc. and Havertys
Furniture Cos. Inc., but that its medium-priced products appeal to a
wide consumer base.
