I was in a hotel and saw the name of the hotel projected onto the
floor. It moved around and rotated. It was very cool.

Who makes a machine that does this?

Dear r2-ga;

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question.

What you saw is indeed a very cool device. It?s a kind of high-powered
projector that is used to project an image through a customized
template known as ?gobo?. In the theater and advertising business
these are sometimes known as ?gobo lights?, ?gobo spots? or ?pattern
projectors?

WEIRD WORDS: GOBO

There are many configurations to these types of lighted advertisements
(the device is a classy, high-tech attention getter but it is
basically a form of advertisement or self promotion). Some gobo lights
have rotators or added effects that can be attached to the projector
itself or can be produced by an internally or externally applied
software program via a master inboard or outboard computer. Even the
gobos themselves can be quite complex; there are metal ones,
lithographic ones, multicolored ones, the fused, wheeled and animated
varieties and on and on.

As for who makes ?the machine?, there are numerous companies that are
in this type of business. Some of the biggest names in the business,
Sony, Canon, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, NEC, Texas Instruments and just
about every other company that makes projectors make a system that is
capable of functioning in this capacity and for this specific purpose.

Here are some fairly basic gobo projector systems and images that,
when combined with a custom-made logo gobo, do exactly what you are
referring to in your question:

These high-end LCD, LED and other types of projector systems are
significantly more complex (and expensive):

in the near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.
