My eMachines laptop (M6508) keeps crashing every couple of days. When
it reboots, it tells me a fatal error occurred. (See text below)

C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini031405-01.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER2.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml

BCCode : 50 BCP1 : EC77A1A0 BCP2 : 00000000 BCP3 : 00000000
BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 1_0 Product : 768_1

I installed SP2 awhile back, but that just made the laptop freeze
instead of crash. A quick system restore brought me back to the
pre-SP2 install state. But, the crash problems remain. Can anyone
offer a fix for both problems? Is it the BIOs?

So, for clarification, this is really two problems...

The BIOS upgrade should fix the freeze problems that SP2 was causing...

and the fatal error is likely caused by overheating? Can you confirm this?

Tech support for $2. Man that's cheap.

I think it's already answered here though:

It sounds like a bad sector on your drive. Run a scandisk on your
drive. Then try to reinstall SP2.

I had the same problems after installing sp2. Upgrading the bios
completely fixed my situation. Good luck.

A temp file eh? Did you try clearing out your temp files and such?
Also, this has been posted on our forums before, people usually
replace their memory and its solved, but I don't recall the problem
being with a file in their temp folder. Clear that out and call me in
the morning. If you're having problems getting rid of that file you
might want to Google up "HiJackThis!" ... theres a utility in that
program which allows you to delete files on reboot that you normally
wouldnt be able to delete (even in safemode sometimes).
