My Indonesian wife has just rang me in Melbourne to inform me that she
has been getting sick recently and on being examined today was advised
she has both Typhoid Fever and some form of Hepatitis; the Hepatitis
apparently related to the Typhoid fever and a possible by-product of
it but as yet not identified as to the actual type of Hepatitis. She
rang only very recently and was somewhat distressed so it was
difficult to get any clear information from her, especially so as the
doctor did advise that if the Hepatitis, or more specifically the
condition of the liver, was found to be particularly bad that it would
be a very serious concern. At this stage I am hoping someone can
offer me some quick info and address some of the info /questions
below that will not necessarily allay my fears but at least give me a
clearer picture of what she( and I)is facing.
Firstly some succint info on just what Typhoid fever is and what it
means to the person suffering from it and the people around the
victim, in this instance my daughter and me.I.E would we get it
possibly, will it persist long term in my wife and be constantly
causing problems, will she suffer greatly?,is their new remedies that
work well?, is it an advantage to treat it early or is it a case of
once the disease is contracted nothing can be done but allow it to
take its course and hope for the best with simply lots of rest. Any
other information of value at all???
In regards the hepatitis I have scant info but the following terms
she put to me which may make sense to researcher looking at this
question.
She says the examination of the liver has not yet been able to
assist with identfying what sort of hepatitis she has but doctor did
quote the following set of alphabetical letters in describing the
condition/infection being SGOT/AFT
and SGPT/ALT. He also talked of measuring these via a scale he called
U/L and that while any measure of a hepatitis affected liver usually
measures in the hundreds on the particular scale used my wifes measure
came out at around 3000 which is obviously ten times the norm for
affected people and according to him suggestive of a serious problem,
possibly life theatening!!
Can someone please make sense of this info and the terms I have
supplied and how they may relate to the two diseases she has; or have
I got the wrong terms but there is something similar that is used to
describe conditions associated with Hepatitis that you could similarly
advise me about.
Anythying please as I am starting to worry frantically about my wife's condition. |
