Problem copying web text and images into Word 2000.
OS XP Home SP2, browser IE 6.0, MS Office 2000.

On my previous PC (OS XP Pro SP2 and Office 2000 same version of IE) I
could copy sections of text and images from a web page directly into a
Word document.

I have now bought a new PC but Word seems to hang when pasting and
eventually all I get are the text and image boxes. I think I have just
copied the html links.

In IE 6.0 the default web editor is Front Page. The only other option is notepad.
I edited the registry to include Word as an option:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.htm\OpenWithList\WINWORD.EXE

But Word still did not appear as an optional editor in IE 6.0

I then found the key for the IE default editor and changed this to Word:
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1891005542-661528176-17591369-1543\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Default HTML Editor\shell\edit\command
Edit/command "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /n

Now Word appears as the default web editor in IE 6.0 but the problem
with pasting into Word still persists. I tried editing an html
document in Word as I thought I would get the opportunity to make it
my default htlm editor. Although it opened the html document correctly
I was not offered the option to set as default.

As I previously frequently used this method to copy from web pages it
is very frustrating not to be able to do it now.

Regards,
	Chris

Have you tried cleaning out your internet temporary files?

Thanks david1977-ga,
I do not have a problem seeing the images, just copying them to Word
together with text. I can copy the images separately but not when I
select a section of the web page including text and images. Previously
I had no problem doing this, I just highlighted whatever I wanted to
copy and it worked no problem.

Hi, Powell. I think the secret lies in your statement: "I think I have just
copied the html links."

Can you see anything? Does it look like <<some garble here>>?

If so, hit Alt+F9 or go to Tools-Options-View tab and untick Field Codes.

I hope this helps!

Thanks dreamboat-ga.
The images appear as empty boxes and if I do Alt F9 I can see the html stuff.
Field codes is not checked by default, I just used it see if anything
had come across in the empty boxes. I have managed to get Word to
appear as an optional html editor in IE but the problem is exactly the
same - whatever I copy takes an age to paste into the document and
then it is as I have described. I can take the paste special option
and paste as Rich Text but then I lose the images anyway, just ending
up with text. The frustrating thing is that I can do the copy/paste
fine at work but not on my home PC anymore. I've done a virus scan and
all is well so I'm stumped now.

   Chris

Try Word troubleshooting. Maybe your normal.dot is corrupt? It's VERY
common, and can't hurt!

Thanks dreamboat-ga,
I deleted Normal.dot and Word re-created it OK but the problem is
still there. I cannot work out if it is Word or IE. I am defintely
getting html instead of an image when it finally pastes. Although I
managed to get Word to appear as an option for the IE htm editor, I
think it is still using Front Page whatever I choose. Any ideas for
pinning down where the problem is?

I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner.
Okay. Next step: www.theofficeexperts.com/cleanyourpc.htm

Otherwise, is it possible for you to paste into a document and upload
that document somewhere so we can see it?

Thanks dreamboat-ga,
I will try the The Office Experts link this evening and let you know
how I get on. By the way are you the 'official' Google helper? It's
the first time I've used Google like this and I see that my question
shows 'No answer'.

Hi dreamboat-ga,
I cleaned up as advised, scanned for spy ware but I still have the problem.
For example when I am on www.bbc.co.uk and I copy a tagged heading
like 'News', it takes my PC about 90 seconds to paste anything into
Word.

When it appears it looks OK with 'News' underlined. If I selected the
word 'News' plus a graphic image it takes even longer to paste and
then I just get an outline of the boxes where the image should be.

The only way I can get Word to appear as an htm editor in IE/Tools is
by editing the registry entry for the IE htm editor default key and
changing it and the sub-keys from FrontPage to WINWORD.

If I follow the advice from various web sources and just add a simple
key to the openwithlist for class .htm, below notepad, I never see
Word as an option back in IE/tools.

Am I correct in assuming that if IE/tools has FrontPage as the default
htm editor I would get the problem I am seeing? My PC at work just has
Word and notepad as editor options and I can copy into Word 2000 from
the web with no problems.

   Regards,
        Chris

Thanks dreamboat-ga,
The problem was caused by Norton Personal Firewall. Setting the
default 'Medium' setting to 'Low' fixed the copying problem.

Thanks for taking an interest,
