Hi,

I'm studying online community building and I'm looking for
(non-pornographic/non-sex-related) thriving online message board
communities.  I know about Yahoo groups and I know that some of the
most popular groups on yahoo revolve around dogs, for example.  I also
know that there *used to* be a very active cinematography forum on aol
- which I don't *think* is there anymore.

Please let me know where some of the most active online groups are. 
As long as it's not sex-related, any topic is fine, any age group is
fine.  Best if they're the public kind of groups I could monitor.  By
thriving I mean lots of members who post a lot of messages.

To further clarify, the more specific the group the better.  I know,
for example, that there are a lot of groups of "women" online.  What I
would want to know is, are there some extremely active groups of women
who are new moms?  Or women who work from home?  Or something specific
like that.  The more clear what it is they have in common, the better.

A successful answer would have 15 to 20+ very specific online
forums/message boards listed with references and links to more places
where I can find some myself.

online gaming message boards are very active and are most of the times
non-sex related.

but you have to register inside the gaming sites to gain access to
these boards. try www.newage3.com

The Anandtech Forums are huge and busy. The Off Topic forum is particularly active.

Check out Google´s groups´ ;
sign in and you will see how active each partipating group is by the
number of members in the groups and by how many postings have been
made on various themes.
