Question ID: 496024
Does anyone know of any cheap software (less than $50) which will
batch convert (e.g. a folder at a time/ 50 MS word docs) images from
within MS word to a specified size/resolution and resave the word doc
into a new folder with the reduced image size.

I need to reduce the file size of a large number of MS word docs.
These docs are large (1+ mb) due the photo size. I only need the
images to be 300dpi. I have done it via copying and pasting each
individual image into fireworks and reducing its size. This works very
well and the file size is very small after I do this but it takes a
considerable amount of time as I have to save each image individually
to the desktop and then delete the old image in the word doc and put
in it's smaller replacement from the desktop.

I also tried to use the ?compress pictures? feature from Word but when
I did get it to work (only about 30% of the time) I still had to go
into each individual file to compress the images. Also the images are
compressed to 200 dpi and I would like 300 dpi.

Thanks
D

I may not have mentioned, these word files are sent to me with the
pictures already in them. I do not have the pictures stored seperatly
on my HD.

Instead of loading the pictures into the Word .doc file, you could use
the 'link to picture on disk' option. This will keep the .doc filesize
down, and is very useful if you need one image on multiple documents
eg a logo.

Then run a program like Irfanview in batch convert mode on all the
images to resize them. Word will pick that up next time the
document(s) is loaded.

But unfortunatly the files are sent to me with the pictures alreay in
them, I am not creating the files myself and putting in the photos.

Easiest: Save as HTML, then look in the folder called "Images".
Issue: If the pic was resized using Word's crop/resize, (as I recall)
you will get one pic in the Images folder for the original and the
resized image.
Issue: I have no idea what the DPI is. I don't think you'll ever get
Word to change the DPI, no matter how much programming you do to it--I
believe you'll have to do that in a "real" graphics program.
Tip: Resize them before you save to HTML. If you resize pic a, then go
to pic b and hit the F4 key, it will resize pic b to the same size you
just did pic a.
Tip: Check www.irfanview.com for Irfanview. I believe it may have a
batch processing feature, but I've never used it, so it's just
hearsay, you're Honor.

Thanks dreamboat
But that is about the same amount of work as going into each Word doc
and using the resize tool. I think I will have to keep looking
