What kind of coupons?

Coupons such as "Free Drink from Starbucks" with an expiration of
12/31/2004 would still be able to be used today, for example. (in CA)

Also retail gift certificates that expire on 12/31/2004 would still be
honored today.

I swear I have used expired coupons in the past and the stores all say
"no problem" but my friends don't believe me. I also remember hearing
that certains states allow expired coupons to continute to be used.

Maybe it's just true for manufacturer's coupons? I just wanted to check ... thanks!
