Hi there, I'm trying to create a solution that stops my Daughter from being able to use the Internet unless she answers some questions (maths, science, etc). The solution could either stop her from being able to login to her computer until the questions are answered (Windows XP), or, it could just stop her from surfing the web until they are answered. It could be implemented using any technology, although I'd prefer something based around GNU/Linux and Squid if it's to be Internet technology based. Is there anything that does something like this already? Thanks Seri | |

No offense, but if you expect your daughter to learn things this way i'm afraid you will negatively effect her psychologically instead. The aggrivation that comes along with trying to get on the internet with this system in place is a negative reinforcer, and will start to make her dislike both "maths, science, etc." and the internet. Additionally, most people learn through their own explorations and interests. Hindering her ability to access the internet and learn will have a negative effect on that, particularly if she happens to be trying to learn about computers. So, In my opinion, you should just forget about it. Because she will eventually just not want to use the internet, the number one source of information in the modern world. |

I can see that you want to establish a reward system for your daughter. Why not spend time with her *in person* to go over math and science problems instead of letting the computer do the parenting and teaching? I think it would help her generate an interest in math and science by having another person involved in the learning process (instead of just letting her find the stuff on her own). If this sort of thing does end up interesting her, then she'll just learn it from her own will. But it could be that she won't be interested in it. On another note, if you want to restrict access to the computer, can't you just tell her that she is not allowed on the computer (or just remove the power cord)? |

I agree with the comments, the reason for implementing this is that she goes online pretty early in the morning to play on the disney sites etc so I thought that a reward system would at least add a teeny ammount of additional education value. I give her assistance with her school work in the evenings and try to make science fun with her. |
