Looking for the name of this movie.  I saw it in school in 1979.  The
movie starts with this man (naturally curly hair) kicking a soccor
ball on the beach.
He ends up with some kind of cancer - I believe a brain tumor.  At the
end of the movie he has his girlfriend and his family around the
hospital bed.  He ends up dying.  (REAL TEAR JERKER)

Maybe this is too obvious, but that sounds like "Brian's Song" (1976).
The ending is as you describe, and I'm pretty sure James Caan sported
curly hair as Brian Piccolo. I don't remember the opening scene with
the soccer ball, though, so I'm posting this as a comment only.
