In an article in the New York Times on Nov 28, 1927, shortly after the Holland Tunnel was opened, the following names were listed as those of people who died during construction between Oct 30, 1919 and Dec 29, 1926: Philip Healey Steve Rolzek Christopher Kelly John Hues Joseph Richard G. J. Slade Dennis Sullivan John Taggart Sezoy Palischick Feodor Tarashicp (sic) August Nevola Charles Svenson James G. Godfrey In addition, the original engineer, Clifford M. Holland, and his replacement, Milton H. Freeman, died during construction, but not as a result of construction accidents. The article suggests that they died from overwork on the tunnel. |
